ELSD's REQUIRE the additive!!

The earlier service manuals were in error (using WJ information) and have been corrected in later editions to read:

"NOTE: ELSD equipped axles require 118 ml (4 ounces) of Limited Slip Additive be added to the lubricant."

Re: LSD Additives...Where to find?

Guys he understands this. HIS manual or whatever says add modifier but on the products he is seeing at autoparts stores it says right on the back DO NOT use on QD or QDII systems. He can not find a additive that does not say this. I hope I am right OP

I know. My reply was to Joe in PA in reference to the FSM error.

Re: LSD Additives...Where to find?

Here what I don't quite understand - (this is not directed at anyone in this thread as it has come up constantly over the years) - why are owners so resistant to buying something so "important" like LSA from the dealer? I couldn't count the number of posts I've seen from people having axle issues because wrong fluids have been used. In the case of the additive, is it worth shopping around to try and find something cheaper (and riskier) when it's less than $8.00 a bottle at the dealer? If axles issues ever arise, the first thing suspect will be the fluids. And if the proper fluids have been used, and you are within the recommended interval changes, you can for the most part scratch that off the list as the cause. Otherwise, the first diagnosis is going to require that the fluids be changed to the correct fluids.

Re: LSD Additives...Where to find?

I'm a bit confused. Since I have QD-II equipped in my WK I have to still add additive after I add the Diff. Fluid?

Re: LSD Additives...Where to find?

Thanks for the clarifications, guys. Wasn't trying to argue about it, but everything I had read (and what makes sense to me) is needing the additive. I'll probably just get it at the dealer, to be on the safe side. Fwiw, noticed NAPA sells some too, but haven't looked at label yet.

One thing that is alarming to me so far is Chrysler's lack of good documentation on some of the more important specifications, especially in the owner's manual...Things such as no fuse diagram really make me appreciate this site and others (like wkjeeps) much more

BTW - 1 Grand, is there a part number shown on the bottle, for the additive?

[EDIT: found this p/n 04318060AB (scroll down) and is only $5-something for 4/oz from mopar parts america (or $7-ish from dealer)]

That is the correct part #. MSRP is $7.67 per 4 oz. bottle.

Re: LSD Additives...Where to find?

Folks are free to do as they like based on whatever source they trust.

I haven't and won't be adding any friction modifiers to my QDII axles. Best of luck to all in whatever you decide to do but I'd be willing to put my mileage numbers on the Jeeps I've owned the last 30+ years up against anyone. Not once have I ever had to rebuild a differential, including on vehicles that went well over 250k miles.
