Angry Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

So I just found out the hard way that I don't know WTF I am doing when it comes to tinting windows. I spent a couple hours this morning straightening my garage, and making enough room to pull the Jeep in. Last week I purchased some pre-cut window tint for the front driver and front passenger windows. The video made it look simple, and it probably is, but there is obviously a reason why I am not in the window tinting business.

After fighting with the passenger window for half an hour, I finally ripped the tint off, grabbed the other piece that hadn't even been touched yet, crumpled them both up, and "slammed" them into the garbage can. I get aggrivated when I cannot accomplish something on my own that I feel I can do. Maybe if I had an extra set I could have corrected what I did wrong, but once I screwed the first piece up, I said the hell with it. I'll take it to the tint shop.

$$$$ down the drain,

So anyways, tell me about any failures you've had involving your Jeep, from modding, to purchases, to repairs, or anything at all... so I don't feel like such an idiot.

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

Self tinting is a pain in the ass. I had several failures before I got the hang of it and even then it requires a shit load of patience and perseverance.

You must do it indoors and the windows have to be immaculate. The videos do make it look easy. Heat shrinking the film helps a lot too. I bought a job lot of film and got a really good deal. I did buy pre cut stuff that was next to useless. It was actually easier cutting a roll to fit.

I had to do my XJ three times before I got it right and my WJ twice, as it had been years since I'd done my XJ, but I used swear words that I didn't know existed

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

i was adding a block heater to the engine, to do so i had to remove the a wheel, the wheel well, and the starter. When i was putting the heater in i was trying to screw the bracket onto the block, and i dropped the screw into the bell housing "where the starter goes"... I tried every thing to get it out but nothing... Then i eventually had to drop the drive shafts and couple cross members and unbolt the tranny from the block... as i was pulling the tranny back i realized that i have a service port on the bell housing...i undid the 2 bolts and the bolt feel right out...

then i bought 5w30 "synthetic" and added 5 quarts before i realized what it was...

i could go on and on...

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

My first car many decades ago was a 65 chev malibu with a 283. The first thing I did was add a custom air cleaner which required the install of a crankcase breather tube adapter which screwed onto the bottom plate of the air cleaner. I was so proud and it looked great. Then the fail occurred about 20 minutes down the road when the engine vibration loosened one of the nuts on the adapter and sucked it to the #3 cylinder. Made a nice little rattle until I figured out what had happened. $450 later and some loctite I was on the road again. It was the beginning of many ups and downs, you just learn from your mistakes and keep at it.

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

mine was trying to get the euro WH tail lights to work on my 07 WK. forget about that the lights cost over 400 to get here from UK in Jan 2008 in the miiddle of the financial mess. then to get all the plugs I needed i had to buy 2 trailer harnesses and then i bought like 3 different electrical trailer and tow behind converters. all sorts of wiring and testing. what a mess. after about 600 and a few months I sold the lights and moved on...................

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

fedex crushed my tinted tails during shipping, never lost money but had to file a claim and was without tails for about 4 months, shredded my runflats, my roommate blew my transmission and transfer case, prior owner tinted everything so dark I had to peel it all off and clean it myself = PITA!

oh yea my jeep has been a joy.

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

Mine was trying to get to the oil filter off of my KK. After trying to find it and couldn't, I called my dealership. The guy told me were to find it and I still couldn't find it. So I called Marlon and he was able to walk me over to the area were its at. The only thing that I can do is just touch it...... I couldn't get a good grip on it to turn it. I even tried to use a oil filter tool on it but still couldn't get to it. So needless to say, the dealership is now doing my oil changes on that car from now on. Let them deal with the headache of reaching for that damn thing

Re: Make me feel better... Tell me about your failures.

I bought a SRT Grille for my Jeep on November. Last week I was getting ready to paint it and I couldn't take off the Painted part to seperate it from the Mesh so I could get it painted. I tried soo hard taking it off. Maybe about an hour or sooo. I'm gonig to try again and report back!
