that is true, but not based on the engine in the vehicle. i have a 4.7 and have the different master cylinder with the brake booster. alot of jeeps have this option as it is part of the ESP system. you just need to have the air bled out of the lines.

Re: Mushy brakes

I just bought my 2005 Hemi powered GC yesterday, so i don't have as much experience as these guys, but I would agree that the brakes are considerably "mushier" when compared to most vehicles, especially my last vehicle (2008 Evo X). I define mushy as plenty of play in the brakes before you begin to feel the brakes grab. I test drove three Hemis in the last month and they all had the same feel in the brakes. I test drove one 4.7L and I did not notice the mushyness as much, of course it was the first one I drove so it is difficult to tell. The brakes still work though so I'm not concerned.

I'm taking it to a mechanic soon to do a full inspection and I'll ask about bleeding the brake lines to see if that helps. Makes total sense, but it was odd that three Hemis had that same play and feel in the brakes.

Re: Mushy brakes

Thank you sooo much for this post. This is what I was telling another member. The brakes (or some part of them) are not the same across the line. My 2006 Laredo has very firm brakes. You push and they grab "right" now. My 2005 Hemi however you push and they "feel" like they fall a bit then grab. They work great however they have a 'mushy' feel to them. Please let me know what you find out. If the bleeding helps then I'll do it but so far two different dealers tell me there's nothing wrong with the brakes. Who knows???!!!

then all three hemi jeeps needed to have their brakes bled and the 4.7 did not because they all have the exact same braking system. the first three had air in the lines, when the pedal is pressed the air bubbles compress and give the soft feel. brake fluid will not compress so when there is no air the pedal is firm.

Re: Mushy brakes

I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe all these Jeeps need their brakes bled. I also find it harder to believe and quite a coincidence that all three were Hemis. And again the brakes are different on a Hemi equipped Jeep. All GC's do not have the same braking system. The Hemi ones are different as confirmed by 2 dealers that I've visited.

Re: Mushy brakes

i have a FSM, the ENTIRE braking system is the same between the 4.7 and 5.7. only jeeps without ESP have a different system because they have a diferent master cylinder and power brake booster. it is a service that most mechanics hate doing but yet it is soooooo simple.

SPONGY PEDAL
A spongy pedal is most often caused by air in the system. However substandard brake hoses can cause a spongy
pedal. The proper course of action is to bleed the system, and replace substandard quality brake hoses if suspected.

Re: Mushy brakes

I guess I'll try it but still find it hard to believe that only the Hemi Jeeps have this problem....is there by chance a recall or TSB for the brakes???

Re: Mushy brakes

i had the same problem on my 4.7 and i bled the brakes and it went away, the pedal is very firm now. im sure you will be able to get it back to normal after they are bled.

Re: Mushy brakes

Stupid question, but is bleeding the brakes on a Jeep different then bleeding them on any other vehicle? I've personally never done it myself, but I was actually about to do it on my Evo for a track day but then I sold it so never got the chance.

1. My '08 HEMI does not have mushy brakes (47k miles). What you are describing is not normal.

2. New brake bleeders attach to the caliper bleed plug and push new fluid up to the master cylinder and forces the air in the system back up (the way it naturally prefers to flow). You may want to investigate this type as it is a 1-person operation also.
