Need a catalytic converter

Have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4WD, 4.7 V8
Needs a catalytic converter.
Not looking to buy from the stealership.

Which one would you recommend I get?
I've found it anywhere from $320 - $1,200.
Just want expert advice without needing to go to the stealership, but still getting a quality converter that will still pass emissions for a very long time.

Thanks

Re: Need a catalytic converter

How many miles are on the vehicle? Any idea why it failed, and are you sure it's bad? There should be two converters, one for each cylinder bank. Is it the passenger side one that you think is bad? If either one has indeed failed, you need to find out why, and fix it first, otherwise you'll end up replacing it again. Cats. should not fail that often, unless they're damaged or overheated.

All that being said, I'd also get some quotes from a few muffler shops for the complete job as, no matter what you buy the converter for, they'll hit you for the install. Some really jack the install price up if you don't buy the converter from them. Also, if you're in doubt as to whether the converter is bad, they can check and verify it for you. IMO, you should be able to find a good quality one, installed, for under $500.

Issue has been fixed, yes it's a Y pipe. If rather install it myself since I rather save money on the install and I'm at the point that I don't trust anybody especially the stealership. Just looking for a cat that the jeep community recomends.

Re: Need a catalytic converter

If you are planning on keeping the vehicle, get the Oem Y- pipe. you will most likely have problems with an aftermarket unit- codes, mil, inspection issues etc. I had to replace mine after I had a misfire issue, causing raw fuel to get into the cat and melt it down. The dealer wanted around $1300 for the part, but I found the same oem part from a different vendor locally for $850.
Best of luck.
