Need help guys tire problem?

I need some help. I bought this Jeep used. Now I have always been told to only use the same tires. I asked them to fix it but they won't, saying it doesn't matter.

Fronts are 245/65r17 Wrangler SRA
Rears are 245/65r17 Bridgestone Dueler H/T I believe.

How many people think this is a problem and I should demand the SAME tires all the way around?

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

No, they came on the Jeep. Bought it from carmax. Told the sales rep when I looked it over before driving it home that they had wrong tires on. Was assured np check truck all over and come back for any fixes. Now they say it doesn't state it in the manual.

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

Is there any good hard documentation that states this is wrong and will cause damage? Kinda gotta shove it in their face or they are just gonna push me to the side as always....

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

If you have approximately same amount of tread left – it is completely ok.

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

It is important to ensure that all tires rotate the same number of times for a given distance. This may or may not be the case with different styles of tires, as tire diameter can be influenced by the tread pattern (in addition to other common factors such as inflation pressures, tread wear, etc.).

This is very difficult thing to determine, as even minor variations in diameter may have a large impact on the number of times a tire rolls in a mile. This is why most (if not all) reputable tire shops insist on matching tires on 4WD/AWD vehicles as closely as possible.

I wouldn't want to say one way or another whether YOU are going to have problems with the tires listed, but I certainly wouldn't accept that on my ride.

I would also question WHY two of the tires have been replaced to begin with. Is there an alignment issue that caused two tires to be swapped out early? This may be something you want to get checked out before you would have no recourse with the seller.

Hope it works out for you, and enjoy the new toy!

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

What does the tread look like on the Good Years (mileage/ tread wear)? If your spare matches, you should use it and by my Good Year SRA spare in the same size. It's never touched pavement and I'll let it go for CHEAP!

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

Can anyone point me to documentation that would be accepted on this subject? They are basically saying if Chrysler doesn't write it specifically it isn't true.

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

I don't think you will find any documentation from Chrysler indicating that you need to have the same brand tires on all 4 corners. The wording on the owners manual is "strongly recommend using tires equivalent to the originals in size, quality and performance". Somewhat vague weasel words actually.

I had an issue with Discount Tire a few months ago refusing to mount a set of tires for me. I had 4 tires of the same brand/model/size, 3 slightly used tires (w/8Kmiles) and 1 brand new one. They claim the difference in tread depth was more than 4/32th inch between the used and the new tire. Of course they would gladly sell me a new set and buy my used tires for $20 each. Yeah, right.

Our local Walmart tire store gave me a guideline of not mounting tires that are more than 1" difference in circumference. I thought the Walmart policy made more sense as tire diameters widely varies. Walmart mounted my tires without even measuring them. My calculations showed that I was way less than an inch difference anyway.

Considering that tire performance vary quite a bit, I would not put a non-matching set on any vehicle, more so on a 4WD vehicle like a Jeep. Unless there is a big difference in rolling diameters between brands, I would not be worried about breaking something on the drivetrain, more worried about the handling of the vehicle, particularly in low friction conditions (rain, snow, ice, etc.).

Re: Need help guys tire problem?

You could take your tires and have them trued in (it's usually $25 per tire. This is where they shave the rubber off of the tire and it decreases your tread depth). This would insure all the tires are the same diameter if it's done by a computer/machine. In addition to that, if you wanted to gamble, you could have them true the tire down to 1/32nds of tread depth and then bring the vehicle back in to Carmax complaining the tires aren't the same brands. Have your buddy meet you there 5 mins in and have him point out that the tread depth is illegal on the tires. At this point, you begin to go into a rage about the tread depth and with any luck, Carmax falls for it. This would be an epic gamble and always give you a good story to share

EDIT: better yet, have your buddy show up as a potential buyer. You guys coincidentally run into each other and Carmax risks losing the sale to your buddy if they don't make things right with you.
