well the new kit relocated it, but if I had to take a guess at it, id say it would help with crank case ventilation.

Don't be paranoid before I got my dry charger I used to do a fair bit of offloading in Maryland near the bay. Was heading down a trail and the right half of the trail had what looked like a very shallow puddle. Friends said to hit it! Pretty much turned out the puddle wasn't a few inches deep, but rather 3 + feet so deep the front of the Jeep went completely underwater and water came up the hood and onto the windshield. Luckily I just drove slowly out and opened the hood and air filter was a little damp but nothing else. So unless your not going to do serious water crossings you will be fine lol
