New guy needing advice on picking a WK

Hey all,
My name is Nate, I'm from Ogden and currently own a Ford Explorer NBX. I've been very disappointed with this Explorer that I've been thinking about getting a WK Grand Cherokee. I've worked on a few WKs before, and driven a few that I know I like the feel/drive of these things.
So far I am leaning towards the V6 engine. It seems to have plenty of get-up and go and decent fuel economy (decent as in better than the Explorer).

I'm needing some help before choosing a Grand Cherokee. I want to know what kind of issues these have, and what I can expect from them. I do plan on modding this Jeep; 2-4" lift kit, larger tires, intake and exhaust, winch, rock sliders and other stuff.
Some questions I can think of right now are,
What are the axle gear ratios these GC's come with?
Fuel mileage from anyone with a V6? Lifted V6?
Are these easy to mod?
Reliability?
Do the V8's leak a lot? I've seen a lot of them leaking from every gearbox and that kind of pushes me away from the V8 and the GC. I've heard good about the V6, but can anyone tell me otherwise?


I apologize if there is already a thread that answers this stuff. I'm still trying to get the feel of using this website/forum.

NO V6... PERIOD

if your going to lift it with larger tires, you will have NO power and just about the same fuel economy of the 4.7l V8. I dont mean to bash the 3.7 for the current owners, but I have some pretty negative feelings towards the underpowered V6 in a huge tank of an suv (before adding in torque robbing larger tires)

Omelet, no one, jeepcoop, jayloop and many others have some SWEET rigs, omelet has a winch mount he built behind his factory bumper (look it up in the members rides, I think all these guys have a thread going on their builds and what they have done in that section).

I get about 14.5-15.5 mpg on average with about 3/4 highway and 1/4 city with my 4.7l expect a little worse with the hemi and about 15-17 with the v6

Its a chrysler product, they have their flaws, make sure you drive it up to speed and listen for drivetrain noise (decently common). The RFE is a chrysler trans and its not perfect but in reality it does its job pretty good, the nag behind the V6 is a Mercedes designed trans, its not without flaw either

Pretty much the only "common" leak is the trans cooler lines. SUPER common! I have 185k on the clock and have 0 leaks, not even seaps, YES I am a chryCo tech and I have resealed my front diff cover (you dont need to remove this for service on the front so it was actually above and beyond a "service", trans service, rear diff services, just replaced my cooler lines like 2 weeks ago... So yes I have had leaks, but nothing major and typically nothing a service wouldnt fix...

The WK has some electrical quirks, it REALLY doesnt like low voltage and will lead you on a wild goose chase following weird symptoms when it just needs a battery.

They are not too bad to mod, with the IFS they are not like easy to work on they take some muscle and proper tools and patience. Really once you get comefortable working on it they are very simple.

BTW speaking for the whole forum, We appreciate your donation (level 2 status) without even being an owner! you-da-man!

Also I was just thinking about it, i dont think you get the V6 with the 2 speed transfer case (if you want to do the offroad thing this will be important )

Do not buy a v6, For all the reasons stated above! I would suggest a gen2 4.7 in a 08-10

As a current V6 owner, i agree with the ^^^ statements and that's why im trading mine in for a V8. It's a heavy truck and the 3.7 works hard to push it. It's a capable engine and mine have served me well but the 8 def offers much more power and a better ride. Esp if you are going to lift it go for the 8.

Agree as well. I owned a 4.7L WJ before just purchasing a 5.7L WK. I wouldnt even look @ a 3.7L. For the weight that these rigs are, the 3.7 is just WAY underpowered. Maybe if they turbo it I might reconsider. Also Just as above said, 4 wheeling def needs a better 4wd system than the Laredos. I LOVE my quadra-drive!

The 2008-2010 with the gen 2 4.7 can be a great deal. Plenty of power too.

Other than ground clearance (and body protection) in the snow on OHV specific state regulated trails, my 2" lifted grand went EVERYWHERE that fully locked cherokees went infact I even pulled a cherokee out whos front end slid off the trail when he tried to get going again combine with the locked front end and angled section of the trail gravity took over and he slid nose first into a stump! (see my "browns camp..." post in the off road section, the "trail rated" rigs have the same NV245 2 speed transfercase yours has, the only difference is the differentials and at the end of the day when it comes to crawling or severe torque applications clutch packs are only going to help you so much they will slip with enough torque.

Yes I am just insecure about my poor laredo, but it has REALLY amazed me how well it does off road, there is not one time I have been left behind (less one trail I didnt want to pinball off of huge rocks sliding out of control as it was super steep and glazed over, I had done enough damage for the day ) There has not been one person not blown away with how well it does when they see it. And yes part of that is simply because you dont see many WK's out on the trail

Consider with the diesel that repairs and maintainence is expensive... IIRC the motor (Not that your planning on blowing it) is like 16-20k dollars, there are mercedes badges on all the parts you get for it and your pocket book can tell.

Hello fellow Utahn! I live in Salt Lake and I just got a GC last year about this time.
I have the 3.7 laredo, not lifted, with 245/65/17 tires.
I have been satisfied with my 3.7 but there are many times I wish I had at least the 4.7. On long road trips I usually get around 21-22 mpg, but in town get about the same 15 mph or so that was mentioned in the other replies. Heading up to the ski resorts I REALLY wish I had the bigger engines. It can struggle a lot with the uphill. It does great in the snow and I haven't had a time yet where I wish I had the 4LO option, but I also haven't taken mine for any crazy offroading (yet).
If I were to do it again, I would go for one of the bigger engines with the better 4WD package as well. ESPECIALLY if I were going to put larger tires and a big lift on it.
