New guy/owner here..need some advice

Hi all

I just picked up a 2005 5.7 Limited cosmetically in great shape. Loaded inside... seems to start and run great. 135k miles. Owner was a medical salesman so drove it tons of highway miles between accounts.

Purchased for $8500 - new struts and shocks just put on a week ago and newer tires on it.

Any initial thoughts or suggestions for me to get to 200k? It is a second car for us.

It has the sunroof not closing issue and I found the fix for that to re-calibrate, will try in the AM and maybe take it in to get it reprogrammed.

Other than that I have a few questions that I could use experienced minds to answer...

1 - It needs rotors - any suggestions on where and what to buy?

2 - There is a wine that starts around 50MPH. It actually sounds like it is coming more from the front drivers side and seems to change with power on and power off...but that said, those sounds are hard to locate while driving. Could it be a wheel bearing? Rear dif or front dif issue?

3 - Not knowing exactly what the past owner did with service, any suggestions on what should be changed, flushed etc to be safe?

Thanks for any and all input and advice guys.

Patrick - Chicago area

Re: New guy/owner here..need some advice

service wise, i would look into the tranny, diffs, and trans fluids. Always a safe bet to replace those when getting a new car. Other things to look into would be coolant, brake fluid and oddly windshield washer fluid.

Alot of people will use a garden hose/water in some way to refil the washer fluid, being you live in chicago, it gets mighty cold there, dont need it freezing in the resivoir and lines overnight and causing a break. One headache that can easily be avoided yet oddly i've seen happen a few times.

Rotors, go with whatever fits your budget, personally, i just use whatever i can get from advance auto, they frequently have 20% off coupons, and 25% off brakes. If you want to drop some money, check out the vendors list in the main forum. (www.retailmenot.com will have the codes)

Whine could be just about anything, i'd start with the fluids, if it is a diff making the noise, new fluid may cure it. Also, i'm not 100% sure as i have the 3.7l engine, but you may want to do a forum search for "hemi tick".

Seafoam is also a great place to start with maintanence, again, forum search will lead you in the direction with that, search seafoam and there will be loads of threads.

All of the information above is great service advice.

The whine you speak of certainly could be a differential issue (as well as many other things). As previously mentioned, start by replacing the fluid in the diffs and transfer case. The fact that it varies with load on vs. off and occurs at highway speeds are typical differential symptoms.

Unlikely it is a wheel bearing, unless you can alter the noise by loading and unloading the bearing by steering.

Did you buy it privately or from a dealer? If from a dealer, I would have them listen to it and see what they say. If it is a differential, you are looking at an eventual repair (could be next week, could be years from now) that will cost a good percentage of what you paid for the whole vehicle.

Thanks! Yeah understood on the cost of drivetrain work. I assumed I might spend 3-5k just getting the truck to a longterm state again.
