Hi all

I had recently bought a second key fob for my 2009 grand cherokee on ebay and then took it to a jeep dealership to get it programmed. They got it done, and it worked fine. But, stupid me forgot to check the lock/unlock buttons on the key to see if they worked and sure enough, they didn't. I changed the battery and that didn't work. Is there some procedure I can do myself to program the rest of the buttons? I would rather not drive the 30-40 minutes to my closest dealer to get it fixed. They may end up charging to fix it this time since the last time I went the guy did it for free since it was almost his weekend and he was feeling generous.

I do have two good keys, but one of them does NOT have working buttons on it. I cannot lock/unlock the car with that key fob. I can only start the jeep with that key. My other key is the original key that came with the jeep when I bought it. I know I can program a third key with two working keys, but I would rather get my current spare key fully functioning. My question is if this is something a dealership would have to do or can I somehow program the buttons to work on my spare key myself.

you need two working keys to do it yourself. other than that you will need to have the dealer, a locksmith or ace do it. ace used to be cheap, but now they charge upwards of $100 to program and cut a key. my brother recently paid $85 for one for his explorer. it was like $40 last time i got one there.

I had a few problems with the solding coming undone in my remotes over the years, I just pulled the key apart and resoldered the connections. Still started the jeep, no buttons would work tho. So, maybe a defective key from when it was made, or maybe same problem I had but yours could have been handled rough in shipping and loosened the connections inside.
