Just wanted to say hi and to get some advice on a Jeep I'm looking at.

Owned a couple of Jeeps in the past;

'78 and '77 Cherokee Chiefs (both 401s)
'05 Wrangler Rubicon (traded in 2010 for an Audi as part of my move to German vehicles, and after that whole mess I'm now am returning back to Jeep :-P)


I'm looking to replace/downsize a vehicle I have recently sold. It was a '99 F-350 super monster gas guzzling pile of weakness. Crew cab, short bed, 4x4 with the V10 (weak 275hp/405ft.lb V10, not 305hp/415ft.lb one) The truck wasn't really what I needed. It wasnt much to tow with as it was lifted with 35" tires ( but with 4.88 gears installed it was ok, trans just wasnt geared properly IMHO) and it was equally a hog unloaded with a 12mpg max. Here's what I'm looking to do.

Downsize, downsize, downsize. I looked into Diesel trucks and I'm not willing to dump 15-18k into a truck that has 225,000 miles on it. MPG is a biggie, as in anything over 16 would be a god send. It wont be a daily driver, but I will need to commute maybe a week or two throughout the year without it breaking the bank (like the F-monster did with a 9 gallon round trip) I do NOT need a truck bed anymore. I can get a dump bed trailer for anything I would need. I'm looking into Grand cherokees with the 5.7 as they have the 7400lb towing capacity.

The next big issue. I have a 26' travel trailer that tips the scales at roughly 5500-6000lbs. I do own a pretty elaborate sway control/weight distributing hitch rig that will transfer over the the GC. How would a '05 GC with the hemi do towing this? What kind of mileage can I expect 9? 10? 12????

Also, the GCs in my price range have roughly 90k on them. Anything I should look for? What services should I do and do you know of any links to DIYs for them?

I know this is alot to ask on a first post but ANY help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the site. I am a "newby" of sorts also but have done a lot of research. Great site with loads of information. I own the same Jeep that you are talking about. Here is some load capaicty information.

I purchased my vehicle about 1 1/2 months ago with 77.3K miles loaded with all options as a Limited and paid 14.7K. Did my research on Carfax and another site that provides all service information from a dealership if you know the VIN and the vehicle was maintained by a dealership. I can provide that site to you also. I also can provide the site of the specific build sheet for your vehicle based on the VIN if interested. I own a 22 ft Bassboat, but have not trailered as yet. My current MPG is around 15-16 based on a mix of mostly local and not a lot of highway driving using 87 octane although the recommendation is 89. I surely would do as much research about the vehicle before purchase. There is a number of TSB that should have been applied given that the Jeep was serviced at a dealership. I will conclude that the Jeep was an excellent buy given that it had been serviced on a regular basis according to the more rigorous
maintenance schedule by the former owners. You need to consider the warranty options also based on mileage. first off welcome! Hope things work out and you can join us with your new Jeep.

I'll give you my mini write up that I put on another thread:

"I have the Hemi in my (05) WK. in town with no AC and driving like my grandma I get about 13. when I dig up my 16 year old self, and the wife isn't around, I get around 10 sometimes less.... highway at around 68-70mph with cruise control I get close to 20 every time, which then drops to around 18 as the tank gets low. I don't really think its all that different from the v6 (from what I've read)

once you come to terms with the fact that you will never get decent mileage with the Hemi, (although I consider highway mileage somewhat decent for the engine) you will have a smile every time you enter that onramp and give her all she's got."

people will ask all day, "What can they do to improve mileage?". The fact is, this Jeep will never get drastic changes in mileage with mods (CAI, Exhaust, etc.). you might pick up 1 or 2 here and there *maybe* might even get some with a tuner 9I have no experience with this though). so when you're making your decision, keep that in mind and BE REALISTIC.

As a point of reference, I have a 2008 5.7l limited. I get around 12.5 towing a roughly 4,900 lb trailer over relatively flat roads. Without the trailer I get around 18 highway.

I LOVE my Hemi and I would recommend it to anyone, but have you looked into the CRD? Most people don't know that Jeep even made a diesel Grand Cherokee! Your gas mileage will be better whether you are towing or not.

CRD cherokees are way out of my price range. I've found several 5.7 wks and commanders around for 11k. I think I may jump on one I found this morning as it looks very clean with 94k on it for $10900.
