Exclamation Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

Hey guys I need some help. I just changed my oil last weekend and up to that point I never had any oil leaking from my jeep. But over this past week I noticed that I was having oil on the floor in the garage uder where my jeep was parked. I thought it was oil that was stuck in the shield from changing the oil, but upon further inspection I noticed that the oil was leaking from around the plug.

What can I do to fix this problem. I don't want to have to wipe up oil off the garage floor everyday for the rest of my life.

Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

Verify its tight!

If it is I would try a new drain plug during your next oil change. also if you didnt pull the splash shield to verify it could very well be the splash shield, I never do a WK oil change without removing that shield (unlike spiffy lube and fail can henrys)

It is tight. I made sure of that. I think that if I were to go any tighter I might strip out the threads. What else can I do?

Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

You could put some teflon tape on your plug before you replace it next time

Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

I haven't done an oil change yet on my jeep, but im guessing it has a crush washer. If it does it should be replaced every oil change. Could be causing your leak if we do indeed have them. The Teflon tape idea is good, but normal Teflon won't work. You need the one rated for oil, I believe it's red in color.

Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

thanks for the info, and yes there is a crush washer underneath the oil plug... just put a box on hold at the parts store, will put the new crush washer on tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem, will keep everyone up to date.

Thanks redpit!

Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

No problem man. If you do decide to get a new drain plug too, then make sure you get a magnetic one. It will collect any kind of metal floating in your oil. Good luck.

Fumoto oil drain valve is the way to go. Makes oil changes a cinch, eliminates mess, and cuts time in half.

Crush washer on a 3.7l? Never heard of such a thing.

Apparently, great minds think alike. Look at the times of our posts (almost identical wording also).

Crestwood1001 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Oil Leaking from Behind Plug

Im pretty sure there is no crush washer.... at least I dont have one on mine, YES there is a washer of some type, but it is not removable. Id double check because adding the thickness of another washer might not give you enough threads to make a good seal.
