OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

I know that the rear axle in the standard WK is supposed to be a semi floating version of the Chry/Corp 8.25. But ive also heard that its an 8.75 rear end. But it does NOT share any parts with standard 8.25 parts from XJ Cherokees or Dakotas etc. So what do i look for when looking for parts such as an off road differential cover/gasket set(lub locker re usable gaskets) etc? Noone seems to have listings for parts for a WK rear axle when looking at web sites for these things.

wkJeeps.com is not very helpful either. It only lists the name for the D44 in the SRT8.
Differential Type 1: Conventional (C213R) Availability: Standard with 3.7 and 4.7-liter engines

Ring Gear Diameter: 8.3 in. (213mm)
Axle Ratios: 3.07:1 (3.7-liter); 3.73:1 (4.7-liter/5.7-liter)

Differential Type 3: Electronic Limited Slip Differentials (ELSD) (C213RE)

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

A couple people on JU have installed a locker in the rear diff. They bought a locker compatible with the 8.25 and it works. It is definitely not an 8.75. I think the key is to have either QT I or II. No electronics in the diff in those axles to mess with the operation of a locker.

The actual diff in WK's are all the same, it is just the diff in QDII equipped WK's has an electronic locker.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

Ok, So my next question is. Will standard 8.25 Cherokee XJ Diff covers/Gaskets work on the WK 8.25? Is the center part of the diff the same thing?

I want to buy a Riddler Diff Cover and a Lube Locker gasket for it like i did for my old XJ. Ive had both of these on my XJ and the cover will save it from just about anything (not that i wheel it much) and the lube locker gaskets are a god send when it comes to regular fluid changes and break in periods etc.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

Well i guess this confirms it.

My 8.25

My 98 XJ 8.25 before i swapped in the D44.

I am an idiot. I never realized i had a picture of my old 98 XJs 8.25 to compare. Maybe one day i can buy the srt8 D44 i found on ebay and swap it in. lol Too bad i dont have an extra $1000.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

No i am 99% sure it has 31 splines. The only part that will work from a KJ/KK/XJ 8.25 that will fit a WK/XK 8.25 is the diff cover.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

quadratec.com gives the following

Model: Chrysler 8.25
Year: 1989-06
Application: XJ, KJ, WJ, WK
Ring Gear: 8-1/4"
Axle: 27-29/1.20"/full floating

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

Now I'm 99.9% sure that rear axle on WK is Corporate C213R, not conventional 8.25.
Ring Gear dia 213mm = 8 3/8" = 8.375"
full-floating axle
no c-clips
29 spline

Only diff cover from 8.25 will fit. Only one locker will fit to C213R axle.
SKU: 187C179A
Detroit Locker Chrysler 8 1/4" 29 Spline 2.73 & Up
Also fits 8 3/8" (8.375") rear.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

I have been in this conquest as well. I emailed Riddler and they did confirm that 8.25 cover will fit. Also in the How To - Diff cover thread it was gone over that the diff was 8.25, IF anything I've put my order into Riddler already and If you can wait I'll post up my results and such.

Re: OK, WTF is the rear axle type?

This is some Good information. And it confirms what i have been saying. The 8.25 cover is the only part that is the same. I knew the ring gear size was different and that it was full floating but i did not know that it was still a 29 spline. I thought it was more.

I dont think its listed as a C213R though, i think its still listed as a 8.25 but i could be wrong.

That is really great news too that the Detroit locker will work in the WK 8.25. I had a Detroit in my XJ D44 and i loved it and i would love to get one for my WK when i have the money.

Thanks alot for the information. Good Job!
