I haven't looked into a 6.1L topend. I live in northwest Ohio and you definitely can't find used srt8 parts around here. Anything I bought would have to be online and shipped. I live in a town of about 55,000 and there isn't 1 GC srt8. I've seen 1 Challenger srt8, 1 Magnum srt8, and a handful of Charger and 300 srt8s.

Re: Peformance Upgrades 5.7L Hemi

A tuner is a good mod. Cam may void your warranty but should not cause any problems for actual engine life if installed correctly. Not like your going to run the most wild cam available. Also if your warranty is worth allot to you, see if mopar offers a cam for the HEMI. If they do and they install it, your warranty would stand.

I know this isn't what we're after with tuning and cams but what would a can and tuning do to you MPG? Try not to laugh when you read this lol

Re: Peformance Upgrades 5.7L Hemi

I've been there and done all this stuff on both my Hemi vehicles, an LX and a WK. They are modified almost exactly alike (see signature), so here's my take on this thread, FWIW, especially if you're doing it on a budget. Over about a six year period, I've spent around $3000 on the engine/transmission and have gained nearly 100 hp. and my fuel economy is pretty consistantly up by 4-5 mpg (around 25%) over stock.

First, you will not get the full benefit from ANY of these mods. (save a tuner) unless you start with a good header back exhaust system. This will give you the best foundation to work from. Several choices are, any 6.1 header (stock or aftermarket), or a completely custom setup like I did. The problem with that is finding someone that'll do the job.....and do it right. There is no way the stock exhaust logs on the Hemi's will do further mods any justice.

There are several good cam setups for the 5.7 that are still MDS friendly. That was very important to me when I chose a cam. It is one of the key reasons I am able to get significantly better fuel economy. Mine had been well proven on LX vehicles (300C, Magnum, Charger) and had been around for over 8 years. My setup is 212* duration, .524 in. lift, and 114* LSA. Idle is smooth, with a little valve noise....almost like an old solid lifter cam. My WK is quieter than the LX, but I have its cam advanced 6* (10* total) and the WK is only advanced 2* (6* total). The price in the earlier ref. is for the cam only. To do it right, you'll for sure need the 6.1 valve springs and push rods and, IMO, you should also add the 6.1 timing chain tensioner. You can replace the valve springs with the heads on, like I did, or you'll have to remove the heads to do it. With the heads on, you'll need a special "heads on" valve spring compressor and a way to pressurize the cylinders. Overall, IMO, the headers and 3 in. cat. back along with the cam/kit make the biggest difference of any of the other mods......probably 80+ hp. You won't get any 100 hp. with just a cam either. All the other stuff is a must to get anywhere near that amount.

Of course, if you do this stuff, you'll really need to have a tuner, either a Superchips or Diablosport. I have both and, IMO, the Superchips is the best for my purposes. This is because, with their Advanced Transmission Tuning (ATT) Application, you can totally customize the up and down shift schedules for ALL gears, as well as the torque management. People told me you can't run the cam without a tuner, but that is BS. I've done it on both my Hemi's several times......it works, but it works like crap, with the transmissions short shifting and slipping all over the place and the idle being too slow. At a minimum, IMO, you should add a Sonnax Line Pressure Booster. I've also recently added (along with the booster) a Transgo Valve Body Shift Kit. Each of these items run about $50 and are relatively easy to install.

Like Scott said, you can also go to a 6.1 top end (and it'll really help), but again, you'll need to do the other stuff, either first or at the same time. I prefer to stick with all 5.7 stuff as long as I have a stock rotating assembly, only because I don't have to deal with the EGR issue, or the routing of the MDS harness. If I ever go to a forged rotating assembly, I'll probably still stick with mostly 5.7 stuff.....again, mainly so I can retain MDS. I'd also have to go with bigger heads at that time. As Scott said, there are plenty of 6.1 parts around, and his two references are great. 06HemiLtd, you live in Ohio and Cleveland Pick-A-Part (they've recently changed their name) isn't that far from you, and they have anything/everything you'd ever need......at a price of course. I bought my SRT body kit from them.

As far as tuners go, as I said above, I prefer the Superchips, but only because of the ATT App. The Diablosport tuners only give limited control over the transmission, but there is more flexibility with it as far as tuning wide open throttle fuel mixture and timing. The other good thing is that you can get custom tunes made that further improve performance. I've not tried this on mine, but many swear by them. With my setups, I run the Diablosport tuner on my LX and, as I said, the Superchips on the WK. When I run the DS tuner on the WK I can get a tad better fuel economy, and I can tune out all WOT knock retard, but I don't have FULL control of the transmission. With the SC tuner, I do get a little more knock retard and I can't tune it out, because the tuner doesn't have that option. To cure it I have to run a higher octane fuel. Normally, where I live (~3000 ft. elevation), with the SC 91 tune, in the winter I'll run 87 non ethanol fuel. In the summer I'll run either all 91 octane non ethanol or alternate 87/91 non ethanol. If I am going racing I'll run all 91.

Hope this helps a few with their decision process.

Re: Peformance Upgrades 5.7L Hemi

If your gonna do a cam you might as well do the heads, and if your gonna do the heads you might as well go for the srt8 manifolds to open up that beast. If your just trying to stay under a 1000 then just go for a tuner, exhaust and CAI. Its how I started out, and I was doing about 5.6-5.8 seconds to 60.

I know I spent about almost 6 grand purchasing a cam, heads, headers, exhaust and tune setup. Now that I think about I should have just bought an SRT. Nonetheless, no regrets. I still love my JEEP.

Re: Peformance Upgrades 5.7L Hemi

Combat, I think yours is a 2WD WK, isn't it? If so, you're about 600 lbs. lighter than us 4WD folks.....about the weight of my Hemi LX....4260 lbs. Does the Inertia cam you're using still retain MDS or have you deleted it? When I did mine, my goals were, better fuel economy (now about 25% better than stock), a little better performance, and I didn't want to tear into the engine. All I've had to remove to do all of my mods. is the valve covers and the front timing cover. Did you end up blowing your transmission? I seem to recall you did?? I am hoping mine with the shift kit and the line pressure booster will keep it going a little longer. So far, so good, knock on wood. I've got about 30K on my setup so far and I am not looking forward to doing the tranny.

Like you, I still love my Jeep, and if it ever takes a dump I'll build a 5.7 based stroker motor the way I want it.....so I can still retain MDS. I haven't done any more mods. to mine (except the shift kit) in about the last 2 years and I am getting the itch again, LOL. I am actually toying with the idea of putting a blower on it, running low (about 5 PSI) boost, just to see how it works. I am having a problem getting past the price though.....$6000-7000. I've got to do a little more research and maybe I'll take the leap early next year. IMO, it really is a blast owning and driving a cool, fairly quick sled though. Glad you're enjoying yours too.

Re: Peformance Upgrades 5.7L Hemi

While I agree those are certainly great upgrades, you won't be able to get a cam or a header installed for your limited budget. The best choices for increased low end torque is a catch can, a CNC taper ported TB, and a cmr tune. CAI and cat back exhaust on a stock 5.7 lose low end torque, while gaining some HP higher in the RPM range. For the street, low end torque and tip in throttle response is much more enjoyable to drive than having a few more high RPM HP. MY 5.7 has far better low end than when new with just the above, plus the Apexi super voltage regulator, and I'm running stock intake and exhaust. With the above, tip in so much better there is no need to mash the pedal and downshift.
