Penelope 3.7L Blown Engine Build

Yup you heard it right.
Well, let me re-phrase and say that She threw a lifter through the valve cover. I still can't find the bearing

Here's a little Background on Penelope: I bought her Certified Used in 2008 with 32,000 miles. My Jeep Grand Cherokee is a 2005 3.7L, Khaki tan with cloth interior. now with only 110,000 miles, She still look pretty darn good just can't move.
The Jeep was running great the week before and the morning of the incident. Woke up early to head down to the Potato Festival In Spring Valley. We got maybe a mile from the house, let off the gas to pass a cop; that's when it all began. Penelope started shaking and had this horrible clanking noise in the front. Went to turn around, just to find out that we lost acceleration, decided to stop and and look under the jeep. My biggest fear was that we had a cat in the engine bay and was going to have to clean up a mess. Couldn't find anything, checked to make sure all Connections were good, there were no leaks, even checked my axle to see if any of the bearings gave way. Started up the car and the car was running like my 1988 Chevy pick-up before we replaced the Distributor: Rough, shaking the entire car, and couldn't keep the car idling, would just die. The clanking was much quieter, which made it much more difficult to pinpoint.

Shut the Jeep off, it was in no condition to drive and walked back to the house and called up dad to bring his truck and a tow strap. Got the Jeep back, had a buddy come by to take a look at it, because I had no Idea what I was going to be getting into and he's built more motors. started it up a few times, finally got the Engine Light to pop on. He Ran his code reader, but was only getting issues from the O2 Sensors. Checked the spark plugs and P/U coils, saw some of those were looking rough, that when we decided to replace all Plugs and the 3 worse coils. Started Penelope, no codes would throw but the jeep still wouldn't stay idling, we kept having to rev the engine to keep it going. Finally, Decided to pop her in reverse to see if it would help get a code, Bad Idea.. shut her down, looked on passenger side; My buddy handed me a piece of my Valve cover but could pull the loose lifter through the hole That was a sad day.

I always said I was going to turn My Jeep into a little 6 Cylinder bad-ass; now's my chance.

I'll be posting Pictures throughout the whole build. Thankfully, I have a second vehicle While Penelope is being fixed. Right now I'm tearing her down, So pictures of the damage to come soon. Any comments or Suggestions for upgrades will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys for taking a look and reading this.

Re: Penelope 3.7L Blown Engine Build

Get some recommendations from "Strongjeff", as he's done some cool stuff to his 3.7. At a minimum I'd do headers/exhaust, tuner, intake, and advance the cams about 7 degrees. I'd also probably up the compression to around 10/10.5:1.

How's the block look? If its fine and your really serious about building a badass motor out of it you could build it for boost and go turbo. I know where to get the parts for forced induction

Re: Penelope 3.7L Blown Engine Build

Here's The Issue..
It's on the passenger side. I'm going to go ahead and replace both heads, It's not worth it to do double the work if something happens to the other side too. I've read a little bit, this was just an unfortunate circumstance of something failing. More pictures later this afternoon of the Tear-down. Have to get some work done first

I really have thought about the Turbo, Just haven't had a chance to research, What have you found? I've already got the JBA headers for the Jeep. That's as far as I've gotten before this happened.

Re: Penelope 3.7L Blown Engine Build

Tore Her Down, most Definite head replacement is necessary. I'm perfectly okay with that, the Cam is all chewed up as well. As I said before, I'm going to just replace them both. Further inspection has shown that there's a pin the Timing Chain sprocket is on, the pin was completely bent towards the block. Looking at the Haynes Manual, this should be straight. Yay me.. I will get a whole new Timing set regardless; there was some wiggle to it. Still haven’t gotten to see what the piston looks like, you have to completely dismantle the Timing set before you can take the last bolt off of the head. The entire front has to come off before I can get to all 12 bolts attached to the timing chain cover. I still have water pump, fan and shroud, condenser, alternator, and Idler pulley but will hopefully be able to do that before the weekend. Maybe, Hopefully..

Well for forged internals we can use the Ross pistons and scat h beam rods for the 4.7. Our v6s are essentially the 4.7 with two less cylinders and share many if not all parts related to the rotating assembly. Pistons, rods and bearings. The v6 crank has a touch longer stroke which accounts for the slight bump in compression over the 4.7...

Knolton thunder makes a set of full race prep heads.

These parts can be found at www.airram.com

I'm going to check into this today. Even if I don't want to go full Race prep, their economy offers quite a bit more horsepower as well, for only $70 more than ordering new Heads from the auto store. thanks for the insight! I like your build btw.

Not much this past weekend. Decided to take a break and go hunting on Sunday, Saturday was spent cleaning the house from the move 2 months ago ha ha. Still have to get the head completely off to see if there is damage to the Piston. There's a bolt under the timing cover Keeping me from being able to get the whole head off. so I plan on working on it tonight. I'd like to post a video, but if not, there will be pictures. Thank you again for the website, I have decided to not go full race prep, but their economy. I'm going to order them with this next paycheck the end of this month

Well the broken valve spring from the picture will indicate a dropped valve so there is a strong possibility of piston damage. The 3.7 is an interference motor meaning if it drops a valve it will contact the piston.

I'm thinking you dropped a rocker arm and that's what chained to chewing up the cam and breaking the valve spring. The rockers coming loose or falling is a common issue in the 3.7 and 4.7.

While your in there I'd also upgrade to solid lash adjusters (lifters in a pushrod motor) for better high. Rpm stability. I've been looking into this myself as of recent.
