Re: Possible Oil leak?

Well it's fixed..

Is the dip stick the only spout only place to fill transmission fluid? It's running a little rough again when it's cold.

Yes the dip stick is the only place to fill/check it from.

If they fixed it, they should have also filled it/topped it off.

Get everything up to operating temps (warm it up and drive it around for 15 minutes) then apply parking brake and with the engine still running and Jeep in Neutral check the dip stick (5.7L) it should be right on the money...if not take it back to them.

Always check their work bro. One time I had a dealer do an oil change while my caddy was in for service and the dumb-ass drained the oil, changed the filter, put the drain bolt back it and forgot to put oil back in it! I checked before I left and went to the manager and asked him to come take a look at my car as there was NO OIL in it at all. I had him write it down on the paper work and sign it just in case of any issues later on. Then I watched them as they filled it perfectly the 2nd time.

Always check.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

Thanks Escape....

After I read your message, I checked my dipstick. The it didn't even register on the dipstick. They added about a quart and suggest I recheck tomorrow after the tube drains.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

WEll, two trips to the dealer and the 3/4 quart of ATF+4 I had in my garage.... it's had a total of 3 quarts added after the transmission service. I am going to check it again this evening after the oil drains out of the dipstick tube to see if it's still low. Unbelievable! How many quarts does it take to go from not registering on the dip stick to full? After adding nearly 2 quarts, it still wasn't hitting the dipstick. I'm going to check again tonite to see if the quart he added today gets it up to a readable level.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

No problem man,

Make sure you check it this way.

Get everything up to operating temps (warm it up and drive it around for 15 minutes) then apply parking brake and with the engine still running and Jeep in Neutral check the dip stick (5.7L only) it should be right on the money.

Don't check it when it's cold or the engine is off.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

WTF - I just checked it this evening again and nothing is on the dipstick. I ran it on the freeway after I left my girlfriends house... a good 15-20 minute drive and checked it in neutral when I got home and NOTHING is on the dipstick. Nearly 3 quarts added post-tranny service. I'm beginning to wonder if he even added any ATF4 at all (he claims he put 5 quarts in after sealing the transmission and replacing the cooler lines). Will this do long-term damage?

Re: Possible Oil leak?

Put some cardboard under it overnight to see how much and what/where it is leaking from. If your leaking that much it should be very visible!

Our Trans fluid is almost clear with a slight red'ish tint to it (hard to see). What color is yours is it burnt or brownish/blackish looking, frothy or smoked?

No or low fluid is bad very bad.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

I blazed home and kept the engine running in my garage and checked it... Engine running, in neutral, the dipstick was coated on the first pull... but I wiped it and rechecked and nothing. It left a black residue when I wiped the top of the stick... someting I don't remember from checking the levels before transmission service.

It's definitely not leaking. I was all over it last night checking for leaks and the original mechanic checked it both times I returned for the ATF4 underfill complaint.

I'm about out of patience with my dealer to be honest. I've been really cool with them up to now.... understanding that it's tough to check the levels while using the dipstick tube to fill it.... it obscures the reading due to the oil coating the tube. But nearly 3 quarts and no dipstick level whatsoever? Makes me wonder.

I'll be back there tomorrow.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

Yup, garage floor is clean this AM. No leaks.

I'm going back to the dealer and talk to the mechanic and then with the service manager. I honestly believe he rushed it and forgot to add any ATF.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

Hypothetically.... if the tech pulled the pan and didn't add any ATF (I believe it calls for 5 quarts for a fluid/filter replacement) - would the Jeep throw an indicator light?

It calls for 12 quarts to completely fill an overhauled transmission. On a fluid/filter service, it calls for 5 quarts. If we've added 4 since the service and it's still possibly low, I don't believe it would throw a light after a regular transmission service (fluid and filter replacement). Just curious if some of the more technically educated/experiened folks on here can confirm this.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

The tranny takes 2+ more qts of ATF than the book says (about 9)for pan service, so the dealer may have underfilled. If so the dealer is not too familiar with the vehicle. If it was 9 qts low it wouldn't move at all.

The dipstick is difficult to read, but if the tranny slipping it is likely low on ATF.

Re: Possible Oil leak?

With all the Chrysler dealership consolidations that have happened, I'd say they messed up. Keep an eye on it and use a different dealership
