Possible Transfer Case Issue?

Hi All, I tried a search and wasn't able to find a thread that matches my issue. I have an 05, 5.7 Hemi, QDII Limited with AWD. The problem I am currently having is that when I tried to drive it the other day, it felt like something slipped out of whack. Drove just fine for about 4-5 miles just before this. Had a grinding and squealing noise and very little power. Following my Father in Laws advice, I bumped it into 4Low and it ran and shifted just fine. Took it out of 4Low and the problems came back. So I don't think it is a transmission issue, but the transfer case. This all started with a vibration when driving and my Father in Law and I replaced several parts already trying to get rid of it. I know that he had said that it is the transfer case and he has tried to work on it with no luck. He thought he had it solved, but I guess not. He's more of a body man than a mechanic. He says that the "timing" is off, but as far as I know there isn't a timing belt in the transfer case. I'm not much of a mechanic myself, as far as diagnosing. I'm usually pretty good at mechanic work when I know for sure what it is, but I am at a loss here. I don't want to drop too much more money into this thing as I am just trying to sell it for what I owe on it. It's starting to become a money pit. Anyone else ever have the same issue? Any thoughts on how to correct it?

Re: Possible Transfer Case Issue?

Did you check the T-case fluid level and if there is metal in the fluid after some driving? Indeed seems to be a mechanical problem inside the T-case.

Re: Possible Transfer Case Issue?

There's a Vicious-coupler in the transfer case that's about the size of a soda can and they are expensive...used to be around $500 bucks and that was a number of years ago...it sounds like your problems are coming from that...they do wear out and it could need replaced..also fluid level plays an important part in longevity . I would go to the junk yard and see if you can get another transfer case. Also you can take the front drive shaft and drive it...but I wouldn't do that for a long period of time. How many miles are on the vehicle?
