Some how, I managed to increase max speed for third gear, without changing tire size or gearing.

All I did was the exhaust and seafoamed it last weekend.

On the old side pipes it could only do a max of 118 in 3rd at 6,350 ( fuel cut is at 6400)

This new exhaust it did 120 in third yet it was only cranking out 6,000 rpms.

I'm completely stumped on how that is possible.....

Well.... If your TC is really going out it might have something to do with it. The TC multiplies torque and if it's not functioning properly you may have more/less torque then previously available. I am taking a shot in the dark here.

Since you were doing 3rd gear runs and talking fuel cut I will assume these were same WOT position throttle runs. Plus wind, temp and engine op temp diffs can easily cover that 2mph.

Maybe I'm missing something but in general, this is what I would expect going from a more restrictive to a less restrictive exhaust and a product like seafoam (+upper cyl lubrocity, cleaner internals, -moisture, etc..). I mean the higher flow will create less scavenging/low-pressure backup effect so the motor will spin freer. You have an adapted custom exhaust so I have no idea how the mix impacts performance at low/mid/high rpms. Most of us who slap on just a cat-back (higher flowing) lose some off the bottom but pick it back up mid-high.

So a freer spinning motor should show up as lower rpm for the same power setting, all else being equal. It should theoretically make "more max power/speed" at higher rpm or the same power/speed at a lower rpm which was your result.

It should be slower. If it's leaking it's not gonna fully lock up and not give full power. I do have moisture on the bell housing but that could be the input seal

Idk but I did two runs in each direction to rule out wind. The thing is tho, I didn't do anything that would effect the final drive ratio. Which means it should have stopped at 118 at 6350 like before. I'm not sure where the extra mph at a lower rpm came from....

Even by Changing the exhaust the vehicle should still (mechanically) do 118 before it shuts down.

Possibly but that won't equal a higher mechanical top speed

I guess I am stuck on calling speed same and rpm being the thing to judge.

Speed is reliant on rpm and gear ratio. No matter what you do the engine is only gonna turn so fast and you will eventually run out of rpm in each gear. And since I have not done anything to lengthen the ratio or increase max rpm, it still should only do 118 before the fuel cut.

This is why I'm baffled
