Re: Project "Six Shooter" Build Thread

Aright guys, I came to the realization that I haven't done a write up of my catch can install. So, here it is, I will also make a dedicated thread for this as well.

So, lets start with WHY would we install an oil catch can.

Almost every engine now days has a PCV system. this system is designed to relieve excess crank case pressures generated by blow by. (blow by is not indicative of a bad motor) Anyway, blow by gases carry oil vapors in it as it passes thru the PCV and back into the intake to be burned off by the engine. sounds good right? well not really in reality, its done as a emissions thing. manufacturers believe its better to burn blow by off in the motor then have it vent back to atmosphere. (some big diesels vent to atmosphere)

Why is this a problem?

its simple really. oil does not burn well. When the blow by leaves the PCV and renters the intake whether in the intake ducting or back into the manifold, is hot. blow by is hot and the oil vapors are in gas form. When these gases enter the intake manifold, a few things happen here. Expansion. the intake is a much lower pressure the crank case and the temperatures are significantly happen. the oil vapors cool down and turn back into a liquid inside the intake. now we have oil pooling in the intake and oil going into the cylinders.

oil doesn't burn well. because of this, the PCM pulls timing to reduce knock. this means a slight loss of power and efficiency. this is where a catch can is useful.

a catch can acts as a expansion chamber to cool and collect a large majority of oil before it even enters the intake. thus stopping it and improving power and efficiency as well as improving all around run quality of the motor.

Now onto the install...

Since there IS NOT a 3.7 specific catch can so some custom fab or bracketry is needed. Now my setup is what I feel is the best setup for the 2008-2010 WK 3.7. 2005-2007 has a different setup altogether.

so what did I do and how did I set mine up?

well, I welded my bracket to the strut bar.

yeah I know, my weld is kinda crap looking, but is functionally strong

the PCV itself is located towards the rear of the driver side cylinder head. here I point to it...

This is the line off the PCV, this goes to one of the fittings on the catch can...

here is the line off the PCV on the can itself...

Now here is the line from the can back into the intake manifold...

I routed the line very similar to stock, back thru the opening in the manifold and behine the throttle body..

same line, other side of the manifold....

and where the line hooks up on the manifold, this is on the very back of the manifold at the firewall...

Biggest thing is separating the stock line from the boot on the PCV, as I reused that boot. I used 3/4ths inch power steering line and the way I have it routed prevents kinks and restriction points. so nice smooth bends lol, which is why it would appear my lines look crossed on the can. this is a non issue.

anyway this was a quick write up of how I did my install and my exact setup I am currently running. did have a different can, but that one leaked and I didn't have a solid way to mount it.

I know my strut mar looks like crap, don't worry guys, I will repaint it. planning to color match it to my body color
