Question about 2nd and 3rd gears

Curious if this is normal - I have noticed at WOT that when the GC shifts from 2nd to 3rd that there is not much difference in the two gears, meaning it only drops about 500 rpms when going into 3rd. This is especially noticeable when I am manual shifting - its almost like I didn't even change gears.

The reason for asking is I had a tranny issue when I first took delivery and want to make sure this isn't another issue.

Thanks

from what i remember...second or third gear isn't a real gear but a sub gear. probably there as a passing gear...hence the 500rpm difference. mine does it.

Re: Question about 2nd and 3rd gears

There's a big ratio and RPM drop between 1st and 2nd and the others are fairly close ratio. On 2nd Prime, here's how it works. "The primary 2nd gear ratio fits between 1st and 3rd gears for normal through-gear accelerations. The alternate second gear ratio (2 prime) allows smoother 4-2 kickdowns at high speeds to provide 2nd gear passing performance over a wider highway cruising range."

GEAR RATIOS
The 545RFE gear ratios are:
1st. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.00:1
2nd. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.67:1
2nd Prime. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.50:1
3rd. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.00:1
4th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.75:1
5th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.67:1
Reverse. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.00:1

Re: Question about 2nd and 3rd gears

When I say I had a tranny issue, I actually had my tranny replaced after one week of ownership. Apparently the original one had a bad fluid pump installed, so after a week it locked up on us. Got it to the dealer and they offered to (1) look for another vehicle or (2) totally replace the tranny with a brand new one, which is what I opted for because the GCs with S-limited package were hard to find. They sent in a crate tranny from the factory and replaced it. I have a 100K warranty, so I wasn't too concerned with it.

Anyway, thanks for the info - I will have the dealer check it out next time I take it in, but it sounds like this is normal.
