Questions from a NOOB

I'm brand new to the website and am looking forward to being a part of the community that seems awesome.

I just bought a red 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I believe its fully loaded (NAV, seat heaters, sunroof, etc..) but not sure. I have a few questions of things that I am already looking to do in the future.

1. I am debating on blacking out the lights but not sure if i should take it somewhere to get them painted ($150), paint them myself ($40) and save money, or get them tinted ($80). There's pro's and con's to all of these options but most importantly I want them to be DARK but at the same time able to be seen during the day.

2. Playing music through my iPod is a must and i read all about the myGig and i already have a nav system and i think thats way outta the question. Is it possible to have a shop get one installed or do it myself? Yes the FM transmitter is an option but those suck half the time i use them and i want it to be consistent.

3. Is there a way to turn down the brightness on the screen?

Thanks for any feedback that would be great!

Re: Questions from a NOOB

1. We have a vendor on our site that does great work with painting and tinting. Check out the vendor list in the forum section.
2. I don't really know much about mygig but as far as I'm concerned it is possible to do it yourself, if not professionally is a safe bet.
3. Yes. It's either in settings or on the left wand behind the steering wheel there is a ring deal that rotates and controls the brightness of everything in the car, including the gauges and screen.

Re: Questions from a NOOB

1. Spend the money and have them painted. A bad job will lead to a ticket down the line, making that 'cheap' job more expensive.

2. REC stinks it's 2004 technology. I'm sorry that the MyGig is out of your financial window but all I can say is SAVE for one! It's easy to instal I did the instal, microphone and bezel all by myself.

3. The screen can be adjusted with the lights but if you're sitting in the car (no lights) at night, it's damn bright. I suggest putting a magazine over the screen by balancing one on top of the HVAC controls otherwise you can navigate through its tedious menu and adjust the screen manually .... and for what it's worth, the MyGig has a screen saver mode that turns it black but it's still on.

Re: Questions from a NOOB

I bought an Ipod/REC adapter off Ebay for $100. Installs with 2 harness connections on the back of the Nav unit. The bezel comes off super easy. I still navigate my Ipod Classic with the click wheel, and the cable keeps it charged. I can skip < or > with my steering wheel controls, no FM transmitter or cigarette plugs... simple but reliable.

Re: Questions from a NOOB

1. Go with VHT. Can be found at o'reilleys. Transparent black paint+clear and only cost ~$10 and will tint both of your tails. I personally did mine in about one hour w/ prep time.

Re: Questions from a NOOB

i guessed but im learning!

I figured out the brightness but still debating to get them painted or do it myself. I'm getting mixed opinions on whether to do it myself or take it somewhere else. tough to find a reputable place that i know will do a good job.

keep the feedback coming it helps!

V H T. I'll upload a pic soon. I also blacked-out my corner lights using this. require no prep, but clean off dirt/greese.

A friend of mine went to a shop and had his "blacked-out"....... they BLACKED THEM OUT.... Got a $250 ticket within one week. could barely see them at NIGHT! Go with VHT. Each coat darkens them from a smoked look to solid black. I personally only did 2 coats which gave my tails a bloody red look during the day, and black at night. And you CAN see the red light perfectly.

Re: Questions from a NOOB

Yes, youtube has a video of a guy using them on his dodge ram. But he does a lot of sanding that isnt needed. Technically is makes a better surface for the vht to adhear to the lights, but looks/woks just fine without sanding the lights.
