Rack & Pinion question

I removed my dust cover off of my rack and pinion to check for play in my inner tie rod pivot joint and found a lot of oil, Is this normal?
It might my the problem I have had for a wile now with my bad steering.
Maybe a bad inner seal?

Thumbs down Re: Rack & Pinion question

Your seals in your rack are leaking either a rebuild or a new one needs to be installed:

Re: Rack & Pinion question

It's official! This thing is damaged! What bothers me the most is that i bought a new wheel hub thinking that was the problem, then when i was about to install it, I traced the play to my spherical uni-balls which I then ordered just to find out it was my rack giving me problems all this time. Talk about money wasted!

check for holes in those boots. they are filled with greee and you do not want water to get in there.

Re: Rack & Pinion question

My oil was always topped off but when I removed the boots, I noticed a small amount of oil bleeding threw. That means a seal is damaged and required the rack to be replaced. A pain in the @$$ to do! took me 6 hours in a private parking lot with minimal tools.

Re: Rack & Pinion question

Damn, sorry to hear due but good thing is if you went/go to Napa or somewhere similar you can get rebuilt racks for like $100 or less pending on your model, I think for a 4.7 its like $75 or so.

Many people will sit here and tell you rebuilt is no good blah blah this and that but Ive dealt with many used racks on many different cars and Napa certifies them good as a new one. No issues what so ever, they're identical to new in that they've been torn down, cleaned, all parts replaced, new seals and new fluid added so they just bolt up like a brand new one from a dealer. Anyway, that said hope you're problem is solved.

Why have you gone through 4/5 racks? Do you do some serious off-roading or maybe if you have serious lift/tire I could see if you beat on it! Never had any issue with them and havent heard of many cases of steering system failures.
