Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Thank you lewi3069 !!! I will add that to my wish list hehe

@BPOD : Have you ever dropped your boat so that the water had to come over the rear diff fill plug ? I didnt have any problem also but my rear diff never even touched the lake. But in two weeks I will have to drop it to my cousins house and I am pretty sure that water might go over the fill plug. Thats why I was wondering

I will put my hands on a "screw type" fill plug cover ! That will avoid dropping the fluid everytime I go to that lake hehe.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Cool !! let me know !!

To get to the fill plug, water has to be at least up to your center cap on the wheel I am guessing.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

you don't need a new diff cover... just run some black rtv around the rubber fill grommet and smash it back on, to be honest thats kinda overkill too, that plug fits fairly tight to start with. I put my boat in the water every weekend and just did my rear diff fluid change with no evidence of water intrusion. That being said I've probably only had the diff completely submerged a handfull of times as my trailer doesn't require me to be that far in the water(23ft Stingray bowrider). The only time you will have issues with water intrusion is if the housing sits under water for an extended amount of time, a few minutes shouldn't pose any issues(10 years and 13+ XJs/CJs worth of experience)Now what I did do, just for piece of mind, is i extended the vent tube on the rear another 2ft and ran it up and ontop of the gas tank. On my XJs that were offroad setups I actally drilled a 1/2" holed in the rear floor board and ran the hoses inside the cabin. If you're interested I can give you some tips on things I did to make the rear diff more water resistant without replacing parts.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

That is what I also did, put RTV on the plug to make sure. I went to my cousins chalet and thats why I asked ( I didnt look under the jeep because my bumper was pretty close to the water but I doubt i had water to my fill plug) :

And that is my little beauty :

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Nice little boat there man! And looks like you're barely in the water there! LOL no worries, the plug is a tight seal. Nothing can leak out for sure and I believe they're designed to resist water and dirt and other crap that you'd encounter under normal driving. As mentioned if you keep it completely submerged pending pressures and all a TINY but may get in and even then wouldn't much damage. Its all about significant figures here and from the looks the diff isnt even getting very wet and for how long, a minute? You'll be fine, I wouldnt even think twice about it man Fluid swaps are always a good thing though

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Meh I have seen plenty of WK's with the plug leaking. If it can get out... it'll get in.

Id say keep and eye on it and do service b intervals for change out. Fluid change is cheap anyway.
