Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Is there any chance that water could get in the rear diff by the fill plug while dropping my boat ? Usually Im ok but I went to my cousin s house last weekend and water isnt deep very much so I think I will have to bring the jeep deep down the water !!

I have noticed that the fill plug is only some kind of a plastic grommet. Will that seal my rear diff correctly ? I wont go deep enough to fill it by the vent but I was wondering about the fill plug.

Thanks guys !

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

if it keeps fluid in, im sure it will keep water out!

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

Agreed. Wouldn't hurt to pop it off on level ground afterwards to check the fluid. If you have alot pour out I would change it asap or if it looks murky.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

There is a difference between having oil splashing on the inside and bringing all the rear diff underneath water. Water can easily find its way between plastic and the cover. But still, it looks pretty tight so I thought off road guys may have some experience since they might be going in water holes a few time hehe.

I will let the jeep leveled for a couple of days after I droppped the boat so like you said I will pop off the fill plug and see if water comes out !

Water and oil wont mix so I guess water will be on top right ?

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

It is a common practice for mud boggers to drain ALL fluids after an evening of fun in the mud, consider seals like the pinion seal are designed to keep fluid IN not out. Not that its the end of the world and you have already done your differential in but if your going to be regularly launching boats submerging the rear end it would probably not be a bad idea to step up your rear diff services over the summer. at least make sure at the end of the season to do it would be my suggestion (right or wrong).

Nope, the oil floats on top of the water.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

You could always get a different rear diff cover

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

I've had the rear end of my car wet when dropping the boat in without any issues. If you're nervous about it, just do a different dropping off technique... Have a guy on the dock with docking ropes attached to the bow and stern of your boat holding on tight. Then you'll roll back with speed then jerk your brakes and the boat will slide off while your bud pulls the boat backward... It might take you a couple tries. You may need to jerk forward doing the same technique. You could also put your friend in the boat and have him power unload where he drives it off the trailer. Both ways, you could keep your car from getting too wet.

Re: Rear Diff and Dropping a boat

If you follow this link

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=8.25+diff+cover

there are quite a few of them since your not off roading. You wouln't need the most heavy duty, but look for one that has a screw fill plug like this for example http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/...gn=4X4products
