Rear Diffential Issue

Hey all,

I'm having issues with the rear end in my 05' Grand (Laredo - V6). It's been back to the dealer around 3-4 times in the past month to try and fix a rear end whine.... - first off, they "adjusted" shims inside the differential, only making the problem worse.

So, after taking it back, they said they were going to replace the ring & pinion gear and that shoud take care of it.... So, Christmas eve, I drive to the dealer only to find it worse than before, and just feeling like everything is "off" - kind of like something just isn't right - and definately worse than when I took it in a week earlier....

So, after the Christmas break, I took the mechanic for a drive, and showed him the new problem (originally there was a pronounced whine when decelerating from around 55 mph). The new problem is the reverse - a loud whine comes in @ around 55 mph when accelerating and kind of feels like a strange vibration through the whole drivetrain.

The mechanic goes on to tell me that it's could be front bearings (wtf) and possibly the exhaust. I said to pls just do what you need to in order to make that noise - wherever you think it's coming from - go away.

So, upon the return to the dearlership, the service centre guy tells me they're going to replace the whole rear diff.... mind you, when I was sitting next to the mechanic in the car by ourselves, the mechanic told me specifically that he was going to put in a work order for the exhaust and front spindles....

Granted, the Jeep and this dealer have been good so far, but this is really starting to piss me off - it's @ 70k miles now (the repair was done just before the warranty ran out), and the dealer has told me that they will honour the job, as it was supposed to be fixed before the milage ran out.

But, I need a reason to keep this thing - something is telling me that the dealer is going to not fix it this time (again), tell me that they did, and after all is said and done, that there is nothing that they can do....

Am I crazy ? It just blows - as I own this thing outright, worked my ass off to pay for it, and don't necessarily want a new car, but I just feel like I'm getting pushed to try and buy something off their lot.... which ain't going to happen, but nonetheless....

Are there any "bullet-proof" rear differentials that I can have a specialist shop put in for me ? If so, what type of cost am I looking at "out the door" - ie : supply and fit ?

Maybe it's time for a 350z....

Thanks.

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

Damn that sucks. I have this loud wind noise I hear on the highway and the tech at the dealer can't recreate the problem. WTF all you have to do is go over 45mph. But IDK where you're from but in NY the 350z is a summer car only. Car is useless in the slightest bit of snow.

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

If the noise persists, keep dragging a tech around for a test drive. I've had work on my rear diff and the replaced random parts about three times until the noise was back to "normal" and it took a few test drives with techs to verify the issue. It won't go completely away (I still hear it on occasion) but if they said they will honor the work... stay on their toes and it should be resolved. Yes I know that multiple trips to the dealership can be tedious but it's cheaper than paying someone else to do it.

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm kind of @ the point where I hope they can just get the parts in (waiting on them now), and will do the job. At the moment, I hate driving it, and end up taking my work van instead to most places - which sucks, when I think I paid almost $20k for this Jeep (WAY less miles on it back then). Who knows - I've had the Jeep for about almost 2 years now, so maybe it's done it's job, IDK....

In regards to a 350Z, I live in Miami, so bad weather isn't a problem - when a hurricane hits, I'm on a plane and away to somewhere that they don't get them !

The thing is, my girl had an 06' 4Runner that was bullet proof, and it just pisses me off that a differential can go out of a 4-5 y.o car, that is driven 95% on the highway and has a full service history (I used to like this Jeep once upon a time). Man, my old XJ had 170k miles on it, and felt just as strong as the day I got it. I miss those simpler days !

Ah well, thanks again guys - does anyone know if a Ford 9" would work ? If I have to replace it on my own dime, I want to make sure that I never have to do it again...

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

I suspect the running gear oils may not have been changed, this could be a contributory factor

Mine has 35,000 on odo and will have all oils changed at next service (42500 miles)

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

Hi Nav18tor,

Full service history - at least since I bought it. So, I just think it's a bad design.... or I got a bad one.... or the mechanic screwed things up worse than they were before I took it in.

Waiting to see how I feel about it in a week, and then if it still ticks me off, the Jeep will be gone !

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

Is the fluid filled enough that it's dripping from the Plug Hole?

OK so its bad design

Do all WK's share the same axle's?

Is this something I should expect further down the line?

My previous WK had done 68,000 with no drivetrain issue's, just a total electrical failure (under warranty)

We don't get the Jeep "lifetime warranty" in the UK, just 3 years or 60,000 miles

Re: Rear Diffential Issue

The rear whine is a common fault, a little searching on here should bring up some info. Mine had it and was fixed ok under warranty. Dare I say complain until they do it properly?
