Rear Differential Sensor?

Hey guys i was curious what the square sensor on top of the rear diff is for? I'm guessing the TPMS reader for the spare, but i just wanted to confirm before unplugging it. Im hoping that will turn off my low spare light.

If that doesnt work im on my 3rd version of a container that will hold 35 psi. At first i tried that square electrical box, it leaked. Then i bought a section of threaded steel pipe and 2 caps and a ton of sealant on the treads, it leaked. Now i am back to what i first bought. 2" pvc "plugs" and a 2" coupler. Last night i used the purple primer and pvc cement to seal one end. Tonight i'll put a valve stem in it and seal it up. Pretty much copying what i saw working on a Lexus forum. Hopefully it works but just unplugging the sensor would obviously be easier

Eh? QD2 works off the wheel speed sensors. I doubt there are any QD2 sensors on top of the diff itself and I bet what the OP is talking about is a TPMS sensor 'cause I have an '08 Limited (with QD2) which doesn't have a pressure monitor for the spare (and also has no sensor on top of the rear diff).

To the OP - did you ever consider pushing FixAFlat through one of your previous attempts to seal up the leaks? You'd probably have to put a regular valve in first, then replace it with your TPMS valve after the FixAFlat was in.

Now that I think about it, FixAFlat is probably viscous, so it might muck up the sensor even if you waited to install the sensor until after the FixAFlat was pushed in.

The QDII will have electrical connector on the diff to activate the ELSD. But I'm pretty sure there's no actual (differential related) sensor on the outside of the diff. So, if there is a box up there, it's most likely for the TPMS.

Re: Rear Differential Sensor?

Are you talking about the connector thing on top of the rear diff? It has a little metal cover over the plug... that is the connection that feeds power to the actuator inside the rear diff to lock up the axle. I've had to replace mine before. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a TPMS sensor/receiver on top of the axle/diff.

Re: Rear Differential Sensor?

I thought about using fix a flat or that green slime but i think it remains liquid until it leaks out? Either way i was just concerned with gumming up the actual sensor as it'd still be liquid at least for a while once i sealed it all up.

So far the spare tpms still baffles me on why it effects some and not others. Maybe people without this sensor are the ones unaffected?

I'll try to snap a pic of it. To me it looks a lot like the sensor you move during the pinch weld mod. There also seems to be one of these same looking sensors at the back of the rear wheel wells, so i assume it is where the TPMS signal is read.

Even with the plug pulled, it still drives normal. You'll get the service 4WD light though, and your axle won't lock.

Re: Rear Differential Sensor?

Well i guess ill just plan on my PVC solution then. Should finish it tonight. Tranny might be done tomorrow so i can test it out. With as many engine lights i've had lately i dont want to take a chance messing up anything else!
