Recommended Rim Width...

So I have some new AEV Pintlers, they are 17x8.5.

Does anyone know if it will be OK to mount a tire on these wheels if the "Maximum Recommended Rim Width" for the tire is 8 inches?

IF the tire can be mounted on this wheel, what are the issues, if any, that can come from having a wider tire than recommended?

The tires I had were 245/70/17, but as mentioned before, they said recommended max rim width should be 8 inches.
