Replaced my fuel tank pan. It was time!

My Jeep was at the dealer for an oil change recently and they mentioned that the skid plate / fuel tank pan / whatever you call it needs replacing right away.

It seems like the few off-roading trips and many salty Maryland winters had taken a toll on it.

Jeep quoted me $1,200 for parts and labor, to which I quickly said "no". I found a great condition replacement pan at a junkyard and picked it up for $75 along with a third brake light (third brake light alone costs $80 at the dealer).

Because I suck, I didn't take photos of the process, but it's pretty straight forward.

Tools used:
- 18mm socket
- 3/4" socket wrench
- 6" extension (x2)
- 18mm wrench
- car ramps
- jack stands (x2)
- floor jack
- PB Blaster
- 2' PVC pipe (used as a breaker bar)

The job took 2 people and about 2 hours to do. You'll have to drop the fuel tank with the pan in order to make the switch. The clips on the fuel lines were a bit tricky and easy to break, but once you know how to work them, they are easy to remove. You simply press down really hard on the clip with your thumb and while you're pressing down slide the two lines apart. If it doesn't come apart, you're not pressing down hard enough.

As a side note: I didn't know (and still don't know) how to de-pressurize the fuel system. So I was covered in fuel at one point. Be careful!

Here's what it looked like:

As you can see, they weren't kidding that it needed to be replaced. Not sure if it would have lasted another year.
