Re: Seafoam Throttle Body/Intake Cleaner

I always take mine in for a Fuel System Service about every 6 to 8 months rather than messing with the throttle body and putting "cleaner" chemicals in the gas tank.

Nice work! You should probably experience a more stable idle now also.

Sad to report I have no good recommendations for you on O2 sensors. I've gotten O2 sensor codes (slow to respond) on both inlets to the catalytic converters (RHS & LHS) and RHS catalytic converter diminshed efficiency. No apparent cause, since dealer had replaced all 4 O2 sensors only 2K miles earlier. RHS Catalytic converter efficiency code came back again this week (P0430) after the LHS exhaust manifold was replaced.

I've read that SeaFoam goes 1/3 in gas tank, 1/3 in crankcase, and 1/3 into the intake manifold while engine is running, then shutdown and let it "soak". Most seem to use the power brake vacuum drag and pour in very slowly so engine does not stall. Shut down engine. Wait 15 mins., then start it up and watch the smoke screen (World War II destroyer quality). Hope your neighbors are tolerant.......

Maybe another JG member can provide you with more insight or personal use tips. I considered SeaFoam as an alternative to the manual cleaning method, but my personal conclusion was not to use it. Apparently, others use it successfully & I respect their choice.

Re: Seafoam Throttle Body/Intake Cleaner

I used Seafoam over the summer on my 5.7. Same method as Walt described, 2/3 of the can in the power brake vacuum drag with a funnel and the remaining 1/3 in the gas tank. I used a funnel and poured very slowly while the engine was running, probably 1/2 oz. at a time. It is a tedious and seems like painfully slow process to get it in there, but you'll hear and feel the idle drop each time you dump a little more in so there is really no other way to go but slow and steady if you want to get all of the fluid sucked in. I did end up killing it 2 or 3 times from trying to pour a bunch in and it struggled re-starting but I got it. When I was near the 2/3 mark I rushed it into the funnel and purposely killed the engine by overwhelming that vacuum line with Seafoam. I then let it sit for 15 mins, then fired it back up which took a couple of cranks and light throttle to keep it running. Then I backed it out on the drive and did some rev and holds. Then after about 10 mins of that I took it on some country roads for a "spirited" drive.

I didn't see a whole lot of black smoke but there was a good amount of white smoke and some dirtier stuff. My WK (60K at the time) didn't put out near the amount of smoke black or white that my brother's WJ (80K) did. He literally blacked out an entire Advanced auto parking lot when the worker gave his the treatment. Either mine wasn't dirty enough or I did something wrong. I did not notice much of a difference after, probably correlates with not exhausting much smoke (burned build-up)...maybe a more steady idle, better throttle response, and a slight bump in fuel efficiency but it was so minimal that it was hard to tell if it was a placebo effect or actually the Seafoam treatment.

Again, this was at 60K miles and I'm the second owner from 54K so it is possible that the previous owner or dealer treated it before me.

Thats how its done. Buddy has a 1500 chevy thats never been cleaned up.

We put a can in his fuel tank, half can in the crankcase, then I poured in the last half into the power brake vac line while the engine was running - literally sucks it out of the can so go slow. We let it sit for 15min then holy hell it smokeeeeed. He drove it hard to blow all the crap out and then ran it for about 30miles and did the oil change.

Said it runs a ton smoother after that. I'll be doing it to my 4.7L here soon.

Totally want to do this in the spring to my WK. And maybe in the summer to the YJ. 235k miles on it though, it might end up ripping out gunk from plugged up holes and stuff. But god would that be fun with all that smoke.

Re: Seafoam Throttle Body/Intake Cleaner

thanks Walt (rep already given), nick.jeff (+rep) and maxst2 (rep to follow)!!! great info. the can I got is an aresol spray can...so when you guys say "pour" into your fuel tank and brake booster line, are you guys using a different product than aersol? Also, I feel like an idiot, but I am pretty sure the brake booster line is circled in red in the pic below. right???? the instructions on the can say to increase revs 500-1000 over idle while introducing the seafoam..did you guys do that and/or have a 2nd set of hands during the cleaning? I just got my oil changed but may do this again and get the oil change asap! thanks again for ll yuor help guys...this is why JG is such an awesome place!
