Re: Seriously? This must have been a bad coverup...

Make sure they aren't just replacing the panel in your bid as well. Too many places now will just get a new panel and spray it.

Re: Seriously? This must have been a bad coverup...

It's part of the unibody...can't be replaced....at least not cheap.

I got two quotes this morning. One was 650 the other 450.

The guy that wants 650 says he has to remove the rear window?!?

The guy for 450 says the window doesn't need to come out.

It is always wise to get 3 estimates and take the cheapest estimate back to the place that you want your truck to be fixed. Most shops will match the other quote if they can get the work.

The reason they want to remove the quarter glass is because that is the way to do the job the proper way. The reason behind it that your (meaning the shop) is only going to be able to prep the paint so well (next to the window rubber) to accept the new paint. If not properly prepped the new paint will not properly adhere to the old paint and eventually peel back from that area. If that quarter panel has already been repainted then sure as shit it most likely wasn't done right and if I were that shop I wouldnt want to touch the job unless I knew I was going to be able to correct the previous repairs problems. Just a little insight on why one shop wants more then the other.

Good call...so my question is this. The shop that wants $450 for the job has a lifetime warranty. Do I trust they know what they're doing and go with them or do I just go for the more expensive job?

The shop that wants $450 has been in business for over 40 years whereas the shop that wants $650 has been around for about 15 years.

Well if the guy that would be dumb enough to give you a lifetime warranty for $450 to and not do the job the correct way then I say go for it.

Or desperate for money. I mean by your photo it looks to me that it has certainly been repaired before. If thats the case the job is certainly worth more then $450.

Removing a window isn't a $200 job just to "paint it properly." Go with the cheaper, and google the shop to check for its rep, good/bad.

Beleive me, the first shop is under estimating whats beneath the paint, so $200 is not out of the realm of reality to also R&I the window.

They said it's not been repaired before. It's original metal.

Re: Seriously? This must have been a bad coverup...

I found out that my insurance would cover it and not raise my rate if the job is under $750.

$100 deductible.

Cha-ching.
