Smelly AC

Lately when I crank up my Jeep (2005 / 5.7) the AC smells pretty funky but then the smell goes away in a couple minutes and seems okay from then on. This just started about two weeks ago and before that all was well. I took it for a short trip the other day and hung around after parking in my driveway to see if water was draining from the evaporator and it seemed to be draining but not in a quantity that I have seen with my other cars. I'd like to clean or flush the drain hose but don't know where to start. Has anybody run into this or taken care of a problem like this? I need some tips.

Re: Smelly AC

You have mildew / mold in the system as a result of residual moisture collection somewhere. The drain tube may be a bit clogged, but I am not sure where this is located on the WK. A cabin filter or fabreze will make the smell less noticable, but of course will not kill the mold, and this can present health problems. Scotch guard has a mold treatment product in a spray mixture, (bleach will not thoroughly kill the colonies) which causes an enzymatic reaction once the 2 parts are mixed. That will rid the mold and keep it from growing in those places, but you first have to find where it is.

Re: Smelly AC

I installed a cabin air filter when I first got the Jeep (about 4 months ago) and didn't notice anything until a couple weeks ago. So get this, after my post yesterday and then again today no more smell, it's coming out clean and fresh again. I also noticed today that the evap water was flowing nicely when I parked. I suppose it is possible that the seasonal weather change (I'm in Florida) from heated air to AC back and forth every other day may have contributed to the problem but right now it is hot and it's gonna be only AC for the rest of the summer. Woohoo! Thanks for the input dmsfun & boss_hemi.
