Re: Stupid question.......

Sorry, I thought I read the entire post, my crazy fast speed reading (reading every other line) must have missed it

anyway... jeep.com has owners manuals for download (pdf files) which I like ALOT more than that paper, having the word search function is priceless!

Re: Stupid question.......

Why does the last paragraph of the write-up on http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_esp.htm say 'Fully OFF (not available on Grand Cherokee)'?Is this true? If I hold down my ESP button on my 2006 5.7 Ltd for more than 5 seconds, I get a chime and 'ESP Off' in the EVIC.

Re: Stupid question.......

Chrysler uses its brakes to limit one tire fires, so instead of having a mechanical lsd, they just clamp the brake down on the spinning tire directing power to the other side. So yes, even when it says "esp off" its not actually off off, it is still there to act like an lsd.

To add to that, I see you do have a limited which does incorperate mechanical slip managment devices in the differentials... to be quite honest I am not 100% sure on that one.

Being the curious creature I am, I had to take the Jeep out and try out the ESP Traction Control in the three modes. Mode 1 won't let me have any fun at all, and, truthfully, I can see it leading to very bad driving habits, as the Jeep basically drives itself. The Yaw Control is quite amazing, but I kept having to 'train' myself to not counter-steer.

When I simply hit the ESP button, the Yaw Control and Traction Control were still there, but the Jeep had the ability to spin and/or slide a bit under challenging circumstances.

When I held the ESP button down for five seconds and got the 'ESP Off' message in the EVIC, it truly was off. I could counter-steer through the snowdrifts all I wanted and the Yaw Control never once interrupted my playtime. Same with the Traction Control. There was a limit to how much it would spin (seemed to be both time and intensity), but it was a very very high threshhold.

So, I guess the note in the table for the different ESP settings citing that the ESP Off doesn't apply to Grand Cherokees is an error, or maybe some GC's have this enabled (maybe ones with the ELSD?).

Regardless of the literature and technical mumbo-jumbo, I really enjoyed how the GC behaved in accordance with the different settings. Very impressive. Guess not all engineers are idiots (I jest, being an engineer myself, and a mildly self-deprecating one at that).

Re: Stupid question.......

This is my second winter driving the WK, and I will have to say that the ESP and traction control have been quite helpful driving in the city. It saved me once from not losing it on the freeway when the tires broke loose. My old WJ was probably more fun because I could just give a little extra throttle in the corners and get some wheelspin, but like was said earlier you can turn off the nanny controls in the WK if you want to play a little.

That was a great interpretation of the three different modes. I too wanted to play with the JEEP so I hit the button once (mode 2) and tired to counter steer until I realized that mode 3 is much more fun
