The whirring noise

Hi, I know this is common, but it is the only thing spoiling my lovely jeep.
The whirling from the back end is driving me mad. I just had my local garage refill the diff oil, but it still is noisy. What do I try next. Someone said get the tracking done which it does need as I've just fitted new shocks to the front. But am I needing to look at bearings? Any help or advice would be most gratefully received. I've waited ten years for this baby, I really want to be happy.

Re: The whirring noise

Have you tracked down exactly where the whirring is from? A decent shop should be able to pinpoint what's causing the noise and tell you exactly what's causing it.

Re: The whirring noise

It sounds like the carrier bearings in the rear differential are going bad. I had the same and had mine replaced at 72k, even though the diff fluid was changed at all 15k intervals. Since then I quit using Mopar gear oil (just repackaged Pennzoil crap) and only use Amsoil, which has much better spec's, and is cheaper than OEM. Mine was covered by extended warranty, otherwise would have cost $ 1,500. Make sure they file the area around the diff seal flat before installing or it will leak fluid. That also happened to mine, and they had to redo it again.

Re: The whirring noise

Just had this fixed myself - I was getting a roaring noise which I was contributing to my tires, but it ended up being the rear differential.
