Guys

So I am thinking of getting a WK Grand. I have had good luck with WJs and ZJs in the past. Current WJ is over 228k on original motor. So its time to renew.

I saw some 05 and 07 WKs with just under 100k miles for a decent priceIm curious how they are reliability wise. Those that had them, what problems they have and how to fix them. Certain motors or trannies to avoid? What are your suggestions?

I heard some horror stories, but not many. Any advice is helpful

Thanks

Depends on what you want to do with it really. I have the 4.7 with qt2. Have it well modded for a DD that goes off-road often(ish). Don't need the hemi, but needed more than the v6 had. Have no complaints with the engine or qt2. The main thing for reliability is proper maintenance, like any other jeep. If it's near 100k, expect a lot of little things to need replacing soon. Regardless of mileage, first order of business, IMO, replace every fluid. Everything bumper to bumper... brakes, steering, radiator, engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials....did I leave anything out? And, make sure you use the "correct" fluid, not what the store clerk tells you. For instance, do not put atf fluid in the transfer case. There's lots of info on the forum here for fluids.
Mostly, I'd say give any prospects a good beating on a long test drive. If you have anything questionable come up, address it to be fixed or just move on. Normal car shopping in my mind.
Any specific questions about one you have looked at?

Oh, and as far as issues coming up over time, mine was problem free till about 110k. Suspension and brake issues due to wear. Replaced with OME HD suspension, JBA UCA's and new calipers/pads/rotors. Have replaced both front half axles and LCA's. Other than that, from 50k when I bought it to then, just gas, oil (after full fluids swap). I have replaced spark plugs every ~25k. I'm nearly at 150k mi now. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Love to work on it, hate paying for parts.

This would be my DD, as my current WJ is raking up miles (228k on original). That one will be my project toy but I need something else as a DD. Cant quite afford the new Grands so gotta go back a generation. That one will be a DD and most i would do if ever is a 2 in BB. Possible engine upgrades are likely, but it will see see a lot more street than dirt. I do live in Colorado, so 4wd is a must here.

I found a 08 overland with less than 140k miles. Dealer wants $15k but i think a good price would be between 8k-10k. i heard horror stories and a lot of electrical problems. Are those true? or just rumors. they seem to have stopped happening around 2010ish

Only electrical issues I've had is with the instrument panel, due to the ignition switch recall. Not getting that fixed under recall because I don't want to risk the dealership flashing the final drive control module with the updated software, another recall that can cause issues with 4lo. And, I have a super chips on it, and just don't want to mess with something that isn't broken. So, I just deal with the lights flickering once every other month or less. Jiggling the key seems to stop it... Not a great fix, but I don't want to fight to get the key out either. A super tight fitting ignition is the fix for the recall.

Unless you have documented history for maintenance and repairs, I would avoid the WK altogether. If properly maintained and upgraded from stock wqith full documentation, that would work, otherwise you are opening a can of worms, as it is the most maintenance costly and unreliable vehicle I have ever owned, in over 40 years, also at the bottom of JD Power ratings. Get a 4 runner, or similar reliable make and model for a used high mileage vehicle.
