Throttle body maintenance dangers

Okay guys, help me to understand what the deal is with throttle body maintenance. When I look at the maintenance schedules at wkjeeps.com I see this bolded warning:

"THE THROTTLE BODY ***CANNOT BE CLEANED,*** DO NOT USE SPRAY CLEANERS OR APPLY SILICONE LUBRICANTS TO ANY PART OF THE THROTTLE BODY. These types of products can damage the throttle body components. The throttle body has no serviceable components and is replaced as an assembly."

On this forum (which I really learn from and enjoy btw) I see lots of talk about cleaning the backside of the throttle body and doing Sea Foam treatments, etc. I've seen so much talk in fact that I decided to gently clean my throttle body with isopropyl alcohol in an attempt to smooth out my low gear acceleration which is kinda surging/stuttering ever so slightly (doesn't happen at higher speed). The cleaning all went well and I was very careful but as I was working I was looking at the throttle body and thinking what am I supposed to be concerned about? I couldn't see anything obvious, sensors or whatever. What exactly is the danger and why are we cautioned to stay away?

My second question is about using sea foam via the booster vacuum line. I've done this in the past for other cars I have owned and felt pretty good about the results but that warning has me nervous. This is another topic I have seen bantered around here but haven't seen yet what the thing is that we need to be careful of with the throttle body/intake, what's in there that is at risk?

I'm sure this has been bantered about many times so I apologize but what I am looking for is not advice on how to do it but to find out what it is that can go horribly wrong. What should I be the most cautious about?

If engine type makes a difference let me say I have a 5.7L on a 2005 limited with 40,000 miles.

IMHO it has to do with the elec control/ motor. You don't want to get it wet especially when on- possible short or when hot - spray cleaners come out quite cold.
The seafoam doesn't run through the tb so it shouldn't apply

Yeah I'd be inclined to agree. If you get any cleaner on the sensors it can ruin them.

I'm on the fence as well, I really want to do a seafoam treatment the way it's intended after seeing the crud build up during a recent cleaning, sprayed through the TB but all these warnings holds me back. I've done it through the brake booster but it seems through the TB would be more affective?

What if seafoam were sprayed through the PCV breather valve? I would think it'd be just as affective and maybe avoid the dangers of ruining electrical components.

I've never seen the seafoam spray. you could use the pour in through the pcv , I used the hose on/just behind the TB and it worked fine

On the '08 HEMI throttle body, it's getting solvent into the throttle position motor. Didn't see any other "sensors" on mine. You want to avoid scratching the interior machine surface of the throttle body and the edges of the butterfly valve. Clean cotton t-shirts and q-tips (with isopropyl alcohol) work well for this. Can't use anything that reacts adversely with the aluminum of the throttle body or the butterfly plate (brass? I forget.)

I did not disconnect the motor because it can sometimes generate a DTC and then the PCM does not recognize the throttle body when re-connected. Not that hard to clean with the wires connected.

BTW: I've done mine twice like this (with no issues).

Have never used SeaFoam, so I can't provide any 1st party experience on it.

I cleaned my throttle body with 91% isopropyl alcohol (and probably got that tip from one of your threads Walt). I did not remove the throttle body and worked with it in place using coffee filters dipped in the alcohol and changing to fresh ones frequently. The PIA was keeping the butterfly open while I worked. Yesterday I put some Sea Foam through the vacuum line to the brake booster and eliminated all the mosquitos in the immediate vicinity (I'm in Florida). I didn't quite expect the amount of white smoke that resulted, it was very thick. Freaked out the neighbors - lol. The end result? I won't say that I can tell a difference but I feel good that it's taken care of. Peace of mind can be a good thing.

mine was twice as dirty on the backside of the TB blade...I highly recommend taking it off if it was fairly dirty on the front side...it was super easy to do and gives you better control over the alcohol/cleaning. seafoam is next for me, along with a catch can and possibly replace pcv...filthy hemi's

No need to buy a new pcv if the old one is good; just remove it, shake it and if it rattles, clean it and put it back in, as it is fine. I just ordered a catch can and will clean my TB after installing this week. My 5.7 has 63k, and I regularly use a good fuel system cleaner every 4-5k, so will see how dirty things are compared to pic's from others. My pcv was barely dirty when I cleaned it last week, where others here have posted pics of a very dirty, oily soaked pcv.

Yup same here, Brad. She was dirty like them sb girls haha jk! Cleaned mine (dirty a$$ sh!t) and changed my PCV and it def helped. Got my CC and a new EGR just gotta install them. Haha After that, it's time to change the many, many spark plugs we have.
