Transfer case fluid wrong by dealers

I just changed the fluids in my transfer case and front/rear differentials. I used Mobil 1 75w140 with the limited slip additive for the diffs.

I went to my local Jeep dealer and I had to argue with the parts person regarding my NV245 transfer case on my 06 Overland 5.7 with QDII. He wanted to sell me ATF-4 and told me that's what their system is telling him that it uses. I told him the part number (05016796AC) of the fluid that I needed and he said that my Jeep doesn't use that fluid and insisted on selling me the ATF-4. Well I went on ahead against his wisdom and purchased the fluid that was listed on WKJeeps (p/n 05016796AC). After I left, I called two more dealers and asked them what type of fluid is required for my Overland and they both told me ATF-4. I didn't bother to question them. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I am pretty sure that an 06 Overland with QDII does not take ATF-4 and requires 05016796AC, right? I told them that it was for a NV245 transfer case.

I already changed the fluid but want to make certain of this. Would ATF-4 damage the NV245 transfer case if used? So if I would have let them service my Jeep, they would have surely put ATF-4 in it.

Re: Transfer case fluid wrong by dealers

Great question! I'm also curious on this one, although I've referenced WKJEEPS, bought and changed my own with the recommended NV245 Mopar fluid. I swear some ppl use ATF+4 like duct tape.....on everything. That sounds kinda weird from the dealer, especially with WKJEEPS saying "(Usage of other fluids/lubricants is not recommended)". I have a buddy thats a CHRYCO mech. I'll see if he says anything.

Reason #1,856,452 to not let the dealer service your vehicle whenever possible....

Thanks for clearing that up. I wanted to be sure since 3 dealers were telling me differently.

Re: Transfer case fluid wrong by dealers

I would still go with the NV245 fluid.....

So, weird just got weirder: talked to my mech buddy: he hasn't heard of the Mopar NV245 fluid, even when i gave him the PN and neither has his service mgr

Uhhhhh.......another reason I'm glad to have this community. So, is there anyone out there with QT2 or QD2 that's running ATF+4? If so.....how's it going?

because there is no such thing as nv245 fluid. The nv245 uses nv247 fluid. It clearly states this in service information. One thing a decent tech will always consider (NOT rely on) is the color of the fluid coming out. For the grands its as simple as clear = nv247 red = atf+4

Interesting and good point! Does that mean that the 247 fluid is basically ATF+4?

I am thinking that the 247 fluid is the same as the 245. This is quoted from WKJeeps site: "Mopar NV245/247/249 p/n 05016796AC"

This leads me to believe that they are all the same fluid and not ATF-4.

I didn't think so. So, how can someone get some definite proof on what they need? For me, I'm doing the 245 fluid, BUT: dealers are saying ATF and WKJEEPS is saying 245..

IF dealers would simply take the time to look on the dealer website they would clearly see the following:

1.4 Pints

NV146 (6.1L engine Only)

MOPAR® Transfer case Lubricant NV245 / NV247 / NV249
1 Quart - 05016796AB
3.8 Pints

Mopar ® NV146 Transfer Case Fluid. Usage of other fluid/lubricants is NOT recommended.
