Transmission fluid check for 3.7

OK.....I do realize my 3.7 has to be taken to dealer to have transmission fluid level checked (No trans. dipstick). And I know this question has been asked before, but...I bought my 2007 Laredo at a Jeep/Chrysler dealer about a month ago. Supposedly they do what's called a 128 point inspection on all their used cars. Does anyone think that I should trust that they did check my transmission fluid level as part of this 128 point inspection?? ( I actually asked my salesman if he thought they checked it and he said yes, they MOST LIKELY did)...I don't trust that he TRULY knows and that's all I could get out of him...lol. I did make a makeshift dipstick out of a 36" zip tie...Mostly just to see what the trans. fluid looked like. It seemed like it had a decent level (although I had no kind of high/low level lines on zip tie). And the fluid is a good pink/redish color....So MAYBE they did check it during this so called 128 point inspection?......Sooo....What should I do??. Do I take it to dealer and have them use the star scan and check it the correct way and subsequently get charged (after just buying the vehicle). Or does anyone know a way that I can do it myself that is not too complicated??.....GRRRR!!...I really hate the whole Mercedes transmission/no dipstick dilemma. I do appreciate your feedback.....Sorry, I also posted this on Technical tips/DIY/ How to.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

I have an '06 3.7L, and I was in the same situation. I tried a couple make-shift dipsticks and one real DS I cut to size (it was from an old van, so it was plenty long. I scored it at the boneyard for a buck.). I made some markings on it, but I had a hard time reading it. The DS was old and dark gray, and I guess it was hiding the fluid....

I found a dipstick on like for the '05 (moparpartsonline or moparpartsoverstock or something like that). It was like $15.00 and the same to ship.

I still didn't know how accurate the readings were. I cranked it when the temp in my garage was 70'. It *looked* like it was in the low section. One of these days, I'm going to take it to the stealer to have them check it. That way I'll know if my DS is accurate, or at least I'll have some idea of the I need.

See my response to your same post over in the "Technical Tips/DIY/How To" Section. Don't know if it will help or not though.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

I also read where someone took one of those digital food temperature probes and took the sensor out of the poker part. There's about a 30" cord that it comes with. This person somehow taped it to his 36" zip tie (marked) and/or dipstick then pushed it into dipstick hole and was able to get an accurate temperature AND level at the same time. The guy even cross referenced the temperature probe with a star scanner and it turned out to be spot on.....I think I'm going to try this. I've read where several people have done this with accurate results.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

I got a dipstick from my local advance auto parts store for under $20. There are tons of video on YouTube on how to do a reading with this dipstick. Basically you need to know the transmission fluid temperature with a IR temp reader to see where the fluid level should be.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

This is what I did, but it doesn't really matter. The low end is measured @ 70' and the high end is 180' (I think). To get the low, measure when it's 70' outside. For the high end, drive around for 15-20 minutes.

In case you can't tell, I taped one of those digital thermometers to a dipstick I found at the bone-yard. I also marked a few spots, in 5mm increments.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

Was your thermometer cord long enough to get down into the transmission fluid??.....I read that it works pretty good.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

Yea. The DS I found at the boneyard was too long. I cut it to fit. I taped the thermo way down at the end. It was plenty long, and had some to spare.

Re: Transmission fluid check for 3.7

Cool......I think I'm going to try that. I think it could save me a trip to the dealership. I just can't fathom having to PAY them to check my transmission fluid 6 weeks after buying my Jeep.....Just makes no sense. Surely they would have checked and maybe changed my trans. fluid prior to my buying it.
