Yeah I hear that! Makes sense as far as torque force clunking I guess I just thought people were saying they heard a clunking in trans during shifts and were leaning towards the diff bushing?? BUT I guess the torque "upon the shift" could cause a clunk up there thusly your issue hmmm. I too have "the clunk" but am 99% thats not it as i hear my clunk under many diff scenarios, mostly low speed turns, ive isloated the side, but not the actual cause

Re: Transmission Issues

It seems as if all WK owners have hard downshifts. What's really going on. I have it to but not as much anymore since I put the 32" tires on. It does it very seldomly now.

I had the clunk when going from PRND, coasting slowly, and when the jeep would downshift from second to first and occasionally when making tight turn. Your best bet if you have a helper just watch the front drive shaft where it connects to the differential. Have that person cycle it into drive and reverse if you see the differential move when under torque one or more of the bushings is going. Also be careful with you under the vehicle. Make sure the ebrake is on and your partner is depressing the brakes.

Should look like this.

Not my video but you get the idea!

A very small movement may not be anything due to the fact that things do twist when torque is applied. But with that said I wish I could tell you how much a "little" is. The 1/4 and 1/2 inch of movement can be the difference between a good bushing and one that is starting to crack. The best way is if you feel uneasy is to take a look at them. 2 out of the 3 are fairly easy to see. The one on the pumpkin is a little harder to see.

Re: Transmission Issues

I did the work myself I needed to replace one press in bushing and the bracket bushing. The 2 press in bushings cost around $30 a pop from the stealer. The other one that is on a bracket is around $100. The bracket was backordered when I needed it. The bracket bushing was cracked but not torn completely so I used some high strength epoxy to fill the holes that are in the bushing since they arent completely solid. I havent had a problem since.

No more clunks and no more rear wheel ticking...

Re: Transmission Issues

when I do them I generally sell them ALL... considering my dealer charges 5.1 hr, the difference between 30 bucks added on and 30 bucks with 5 more hours labor in a year or 2 down the road makes it VERY worth doing them all the first time if your paying someone to go in there... the front mount is simple to replace and if your going to skimp I would skimp on this one, It can be replaced by taking the splash shield off under the vehicle and viola, its right there. That said, the front and back one are typically the ones to go, they seem to see the most torque on the mounts themselves, and when one fails it just adds all the more stress to the other.

Btw a set I did about 2 weeks ago, getting the front mount was not a problem at all (I think we had SOME in stock).
