Transmission won't engage

Last week, while trying to leave for work, I put the car in reverse and went nowhere. I tried every gear and revved the engine and it just sounded like it was in neutral. I had been having trouble with it sometimes not engaging right away but after a second or two, it would work just fine. While driving, it would shudder when trying to get on the gas when the speed limit would increase.

Took it to the dealer fearing the worst because it has 205K on it and I was sure it had taken it's last trip.

Turns out, the trans fluid was nice and clean with no metal bits or burnt smell. The filters in the trans (one going to the trans and the other sending fluid to the rear transfer case) were pretty gunked up, causing a lack of pressure from the pump and not allowing fluid to flow freely.

I had both filters replaced and the car shifts like new now.

I have regularly had the trans fluid flushed and replaced about every 60K miles but never had it actually opened, drained, and had the filters checked.

After a decent drive, all symptoms seem to be gone.

Re: Transmission won't engage

Trans. filters with 205K on them?? I am not surprised you had problems. In mine I change fluid and filters every 30K, have nearly 100 hp. more than stock (see signature) and mine (with tranny mods.) works a whole bunch better than stock.

Bet you'll change it more often now, too.

Re: Transmission won't engage

Yeah I always had it flushed, just never even thought about the filters.

What do you have on your trans? Sonnax, SC ATT, Transgo?

I'd love to firm it up and improve it for what I can. Just not sure where to start

Re: Transmission won't engage

Dorman oil pan with a drain (way cleaner and easier), Sonnax Line Pressure Booster, Transgo Shift Kit, and Superchips Advanced Transmission Tuning Application (ATT) set up with my custom shift schedules and torque management settings. The transmission is now day and night better than when stock. Shifts are very firm (very little slippage), both light and full throttle and upshifts/downshifts are set exactly like I want them, with no lugging and smooth downshifts with just he slightest addition of throttle.

Best/easiest place to start is with the Sonnax Booster, as it can be done externally (plug and play) and it's not overly difficult to get to. By itself, it won't make much difference at light throttle, but you'll notice it at advanced throttle settings. The Transgo requires dropping the oil pan (good time to put on one with a drain plug) and removing the valve body. It's an easy upgrade, but a little messy. This firms things up a bit, without doing anything else. The ATT App., programmed correctly, with tie everything together and make it about as good as it can get without a performance rebuild.
