Question Trying to Understand..

Bilsteins have an issue...(edited on 6/6/11)

I am set to put on my new Bilstein's (front and back), 1/4" rocky road front strut top spacer, and a 2" Rough Country Lift.

I plan to install a set of 255/70 R17 Firestone Destination A/T's. (I just might go bigger since I have the spacers now.)

If you have this set up (tires and 05WK) can you tell me if the spacers are necessary? Do You have them on?

Okay apparently no one has this set up..I know many of you have installed the bilstein struts. I just tried installing my leveler and strut. Does not line up! The strut is too long! Is there something wrong? The strut actually has the mounting holes on a bracket that extends down and around the bottom of it! Argh!

Thanks to all who replied

Just as a 411 we continued installing it, used a grinding wheel to completely remove the extra piece...Installed it and now no contact with anything. Had to creatively find another location to "zip tie" the ABS Wiring, but at least its in!

so let me just ask... you removed the entire bracket all together that comes on the bilstein? im doing my RC lift this sat and this is something im glad i heard about before i started my install. So essentially that bracket just holds the harness for the ABS? or is it also used for holding the strut?

was there anything else you encountered during the install like tool wise or install wise that could be useful to me that i wouldn't know about?

Oh BOY! yes you will find my other post..."Stuck with the front end in the air"

The tools listed on the manual aren't accurate. Be sure to have metric of all size sockets from 10mm to 24mm especially 15 and 18. We also needed a 5/16" wrench to aid in several places.

We did indeed cut the bracket completely off. I don't have a pic to prove it, but I can get one if necessary.

My clevis bolt is stuck, seized in place on Driver's side. Nothing worked, but we have 3 of them on...so we took it to a mechanic. He is installing the new strut by removing it from the fork. Yeah I can't wait to see if he actually does it.

When we get it back we will have to try and install the lift and leveler by using the spring compressor so we don't have to remove the strut too.

Oh and be careful...we ruined the lock nut key and had to spend a couple hours getting one of the tires off!

Longer story short...be prepared for everything!

Yes we did, it wouldn't fit correctly it hung down as my pic shows and was hitting on the drive shaft (which actually was bent from not noticing it in the first place and attempting to reconnect everything). the piece that is on the bottom of the shaft makes the strut longer than the OEM strut. even with the lift installed it was hitting.

I searched the forum for others who also had the same problem, they bent theirs out of the way...but it really needed to be removed.

I also posted (see my first couple of posts in this thread) asking for advice. No one replied....to help, but now that its done...

I have the same bilsteins on my stock wk and they do not interfere at all.

yeah, there must be something you're missing. i've never heard on anyone with that issue before and tons of people run bilsteins

I understand where each of you feel that way, but..again I posted asking for help, here and on another thread, no one had any input then. Monday morning quarterbacking...argh

Its a little too late now, its been cut and structurally there is no difference. I found on another forum (sorry) others who had the same problem. Including Acid Cold.. so that is when we decided to cut it. For those who are curious:

ok thanks for the feedback. After looking at the other site and what guys were saying... it looks like the suspension was just hanging low causing it to hit that strut plate.

I appreciate the heads up on the socket sizes... I have all of those in impact and standard along with a 1/2" drive breaker bar and 3ft pipe for more leverage. And obviously an air gun and cutoff wheel...
