Re: Vinyl roofed people?

This seems like what they did in the 80's....why would you want to do it to your Jeep?

Re: Vinyl roofed people?

Too bad you have the plastic "nut" sticking up...I would suggest a set screw; fasten to flush, then apply some silicone inside the hex or slot (on the top of the set screw); then cover with this vinyl.

Are these the typical square nylon "nuts" that go in the body (like the ones used on headlights and such) and accept a screw? I bet you could find some sort of square plug that would fit snug, yet flush to the top...Always be nice to incporate something that you can go back (to stock) on.

Re: Vinyl roofed people?

Umm I've seen it more than once and I don't get it. It's just a black roof. What's up with it? I mean if you like it that's ok I just don't think it's all that.

If I did not need the roof rack I would have used the opportunity to get rid of them and to avoid all the problems mentioned here I would have used a plug as suggested by TimmyB in this thread. These two pics are from him:

The Plug

Installed. If trimmed carefully, it would not bee too visible.

This is a shot from my install. At this stage I was focused on the center of the roof and would come back to finish the trim around the mounts later but you can see how thin the vinyl is ... hence the TimmyB plugs.

And here you can see one plug trimmed before putting back the roof mounts.

I came across a bunch of different opinions on the potential for wrinkle when applying a piece of trim on a vinyled surface before doing my roof. I am no expert but I remember that there was more or less an agreement that wrinkles were possible and that the chance of them happening increased when using lower quality vinyls, applying vinyl at low temperatures, applying trim with only a small length of vinyl under it. Some installers explained that letting the vinyl sit in 24-48 hours helped. Others held that this did not happen to experienced installers using the best products.

I took the risk by lack of real options. Timing around the mounted roof racks was way beyond my skills.

I used a good vinyl although not as good as the 3m180c, installed in a relatively low temperature maybe 10 degree celcius and put the roof racks back on right away. Its been a couple months and I drive nearly 4000 miles since in hot and cold. I was soooo ready to call this BS that I went down to take some pics of my roof ... only to realize that I have a wrinkle ...its small, acceptable to me but nevertheless disappointing.

All good

real dirty but still good

still dirty, still good

Problem, front, driver side. I had not noticed until close inspection for this thread.

A closer shot

Re: Vinyl roofed people?

So again I have to ask since my question hasn't been answered. Are you doing this strictly for looks or is there some other benefit?
