Re: weird sound when driving?

Sounds like a shot wheel bearing, I had the same problem. I put a new tire on and thought it was the tire also but it turned out to be a bad bearing.

Re: weird sound when driving?

Same hum here but i feel it around the trans area, it's not a constant hum for me thought, it's every half a second and it has a slight vibration to it. The other whine i have comes from my rear yoke bearing.

stopped at the garage I always get my tires and inspection done. they took it for a drive and lifted it up to check the wheels. My back pass. wheel has a SLIGHT wobble...LOOSE BEARING. They said they are sold as entire hub assembly and are $257 each+ 2 hrs labor. Which would be over $600 total for both rear.

BUT...they also said..."I know you like to do a lot of your own work, and you can probably find the parts online cheaper. We use TimKen brand and have never had any issues. you can do it in your driveway if you have a jack" , then he showed me in the service manual how it is basically done.

He also said "if you can find the parts cheap and aren't comfortable doing it yourself, you can bring the parts here and we can have it done in a couple hrs."

so , I found the hubs here http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...A590141-209971

for $134 each (after I ordered them, they went up to $135...weird)
+ $15 for shipping....discount promotion code for 5% off too.

total = about $274 and I can do it myself

I'll let you know if it fixes the noise LOL

they are pretty confident that will do the trick thouh

Thought so, I had the same exact sound, I was thinking there is no way my crappy 235 All season tire sounds like that, it sounded like I had a mud tire on it. Turned out to be the bearing but they do sound just like a knobby tire on the road when they go bad.

Re: weird sound when driving?

Finally got a professional oppinion at a local shop "erie drivetrain". they said it's the bearings in my rearend. unfortunately! So, have an appointment a week from saturday to have them replaced. They said the ring and pinion gears SHOULD be ok....however, if I need to replace them later they will only charge me $100 labor + parts (instead of the normal $500 labor) because their suppliers do not carry my gears (8.25" 3:73) and they will have to get them from the dealer and that increases the cost abotu $300-$400.

They said total for bearing replacement will be about $750 :-/

Oh well................

Re: weird sound when driving?

I think I just developed this issue too on my '05 WK. The rear wheels feel very knobby at lower speeds and it sounds like I can hear the rear tires louder, with a strong vibration on and off.

Re: weird sound when driving?

This was brought back from the dead but as soon as he said he replaced the pinion seal I knew it was going to need an overhaul... I am HIGHLY doubting the pinion nut was torqued properly following the replacement, bearing preload fail not that it never happens, I have seen wheel bearings replaced for rear end noises, personally I have not ever seen a rear end noise caused by a wheel bearing aka more than likely its from the carrier or pinion.

best thing to do when you devlop a rear end noise is to pull the differential cover or drain it (front end) and see if there is metal in it, on a lift I have the ability to have someone in the car drive it up to speed using a stethoscope on bearings to pinpoint the failure pretty much under no circumstances would I suggest that on the ground (jackstands or otherwise).
