Re: What do I do with all there's Gears?

Yeah there's a bunch of econoboxes using CVT's, but the manufacturers of them are still trying to work out how to make one last behind an engine with more serious torque.
I personally hate CVT's, well,at least the ones that are programmed for the engine to run at a constant speed..... others, like the one Nissan uses in its G36/G37 behaves more like a conventional automatic, with more traditional stepped "gears", are actually pretty good.

Re: What do I do with all there's Gears?

Thanks to all the heplful and ooohhh yeah, to the Clowns keep on Clownin I ain't mad at Cha...So it comes to this, I had an idea of what the gears are for, maybe I didn't explain myself right, but what I meant was If I wanted to stay at a certain gear woudnt I just keep it in drive and accelerate only to a certain speed? I mean is there a purpose as to why I would have the option to choose gears with an automatic transmission.? Or is it just pissing me off by taking up space. and ummm ooohhh yeah I discovered these gears cause I use to drive with my right hand on the shifter thingamajiggy and actually found it quite relaxing pushing and pulling it from side to side while driving. Until I noticed that the Jeep used to jerk alot, and thought something was getting F'd up, until I noticed that numbers light up on the dash when I did this. Now, don't nobody laugh.

Re: What do I do with all there's Gears?

Alright man. If you were born in 79 WTH have you been?! LOL just playin!

Those gears are intended for engine braking or towing or snow. When in snow/rain sometime you want to stay in a certain gear.

EX. Putting it into [2] will let you accelerate through first, and into second, but NOT out of second.

[4] Will let you accelerate through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th but let you go into 5th or 6th.

Sometimes used when youre towing something. you want to engine brake so trying to stop from going 60mph you'l;l put it into 4th while tapping the brakes. then 3rd, etc..

Does that help?! haha

OR you can HOLD that Auto stick to the left and apply the breaks. The engine will automatically downshift through the gears. Good emergency stopping power on dry pavement.

Re: What do I do with all there's Gears?

Ggeeeeze I thought Id get a brake considering Im from the city and have taken the train my whole life. Kinda new to cars but I do know how to drive a hoe I mean a horse. this is actually kinda funny how many people jump on the opportunity to take cheap shots at a Noob. Kinda kool to be underated, But ummmm this post hasn't gone out in Vain I actually learned something. Maybe nextime Ill ask what is the purpose of that thing they call the dashboard instead of serving me as a foot rest while Im driving.

Re: What do I do with all there's Gears?

Here's something to try,Blueflame

Select [2], accelerate to 30 mph, then punch the gas. See how much quicker it gets up and goes? Imagine you were trying to pass someone, you press the gas pedal all the way down and it takes 2-5 seconds before it downshifts and takes off. If you have already selected [2] then there is no delay before the acceleration.

Another reason you might want to set your gear.

Thanxx Marlin, Yeah this a kool site Im glad I found it. I mean they got other Forums but you guys made me feel right at home here. I'm in love with my Jeep so I want to learn everything about it, Its like I read somewhere when you own a Jeep it's like you join a secret club. People on the street say hi to me for no reason( Its New York City So people rather flip you the bird before saying hi if you know what I mean) Also The ladies love it. 05WK Thanx for the tip man. I'll give that shot. I have always wanted to learn how to drive stick I guess this will give me a basic rundown, But I have stayed in AwEe when I found out there were Jeeps that come in stick cause I just thought it was only smaller cars and sports cars that are available in Manual stick.
