What radar detector do you use?

I'm curious to know what radar detector you use, and why. I'm thinking about buying a new one, and not willing to spend more than $120. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Also, I've got a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L Limited, I've read that athermic windscreens cause performance issues. Am I affected by this? If so, what's your best opinion on mounting.

5.7Unlimited is just really nice
Re: What radar detector do you use?

I've had my Escort Passport 8500 X50 for 2 years now and it has worked great. I haven't had any windsheild problems like the one you mentioned and the thing gives plenty of warning. you just have to turn off the X band because a lot of automatic doors use that band (as well as regular K band). but when ever Ka or LASER comes on I know it's not a false alert and it never is. There are better detectors out there now i'm sure since the 8500 is more than 4 years old but one thing I can tell you for sure is if you are going to bother getting one make sure you spend more than 100 and get a good one, mine was $330 CDN and it is worth every penny because I know it has saved me for sure at least 4 times. When you get one make sure you mount it in the window straight so that it's not pointing up in the air or down on the ground, it might not pick up the signal as good and you'll be left with a ticket and cursing radar detectors.

I have a Valentine One, but I don't drive fast enough anymore to even warrant having it. I actually bought it when I was daily driving a Camaro Z28. If I ever get that car up & running again, maybe I'll need it.

Re: What radar detector do you use?

I have the Passport X50i with GPS . It remembers the locations of speed cameras and radar and warns when I am approaching them...Some of the older ford cars had a heated windshield option that would cause problems with the radar detectors...The signal couldnt pass through the windshield....Jeeps dont have this option so you are fine...

Re: What radar detector do you use?

I use the V1 radar Locator

IMHO low end detectors are worthless, I learned this @ 16 with the $60 Radio Shack special.

Re: What radar detector do you use?

I'm going to buy a V1....have read nothing but good things about it.

Quick question though. Would it work with tinted windshield? I've got 50% tint on mine(think it's 50%....the most transparant one)

Re: What radar detector do you use?

V1 all the way. doesn't have gps but the others don't have directional arrows telling you where the radar is coming from. the other detectors don't tell you how many different radar signals that are in your path and which one of them is the strongest strength and the direction it's coming from. not knocking the other detectors but most people who own a V1 love the arrows.

Just wanted to chime in here, the 8500 X50 does all of those things you say 'other detectors dont do'

mine will report 2 sources on 3 different bands simultaneously as well as show the strength of each source, another mode you can chose will show the actual frequency of the source (ie 805.14 MHz)

Edit: the V1 is really awesome though, I would have gotten it if it wasnt $180 more expensive than the one I chose at the time.

Re: What radar detector do you use?

maybe the v1 was more expensive at the time of purchase but consider this:

I bought my V1 in 1999. In 2007, when i got the WK, I sent it in with 200hundo it was for an update. they sent me a freaking brand new detector in the box with all the goodies........
