What should I do?? What should I do???

2005 Grand Cheerokee Lauredo Jeep (68,000 miles) maintenance question and advice:

I'm happy I found this Forum that has information on how I can understand my jeep better. I want to walk the road of doing it myself Jeep maintenance ( I want to protect my time and pockets from the shady Dealerships and Mechanics) Im ashamed to admit, I'm such A noob when it comes to cars. I'm so naive when it came to buying this Jeep that I never asked the Dealrship what kind of work had they done to the Jeep. Heck! I don't even know if it had a tune up!
So my question to you guys and gals is what should I look out for or replace?
Engine coolant, Engine and transmission oil and power steering are all fine, I think.. Lol.. That's how basic my understanding of cars is..

Re: What should I do?? What should I do???

The first place to start is by looking at the recommended service schedule in your owner's manual and see what would be required for the mileage you have.

If you do not have any of the records from the previous owner about the service history, I would assume nothing has been done.

To be on the safe side, I would certainly:

Change the oil & Replace air filter
Replace spark plugs and check the PCV and EGR valves
Replace the Transfer Case and differential oils
Replace transmission fluid & filter
Check the serpentine belt for cracking/wear replace if necessary

The cooling system doesn't have to be done quite yet...but I would probably tackle it at the same time.

As to what you can do yourself - it all depends on the time you are willing to spend and equipment you have available.

In order of difficulty (and I'm sure others find things easier/harder, use this just as a guide!):

Oil and Filter (easiest)
Serpentine belt
Transfer case & differentials
Engine Coolant
Transmission service
Spark plugs & PCV valve

You could certainly tackle the oil change, transfer case, differentials with minimal tools, and there are great write-ups here on how to do it

The plugs aren't particularly difficult if you have the right combination of sockets and extensions and are in no rush.

Most of the other fluid changes are simple enough, but are ALOT easier if you have the vehicle up on a lift and the right equipment. Luckily, these are fairly cheap to get done, and I usually don't bother servicing the transmission & cooling system myself.

Re: What should I do?? What should I do???

That is great write up by the Dr. I also bought an 05 grand cherokee w/ 66,000 miles about 3 months ago and was in the same position. I found this site and since have replaced the spark plugs, pcv, rear diff., and air filter. I am planning on doing the front diff. and transfer case this week. Everything I learned to do it came from this site and youtube, as I am also a noob. Dont be scared it is all easier than you would think. The more I do myself the more confident and excited I get for the next project!

As a new member I can honestly say all the people on this site are great and here to share their knowledge..

here is good video that walks you through changing your plugs:

Re: What should I do?? What should I do???

Thanx alot guys! I'm glad you guys gave me a starting point. To the Doc, I appretiate the detailed list, it was just what I was looking for. JW I agree with you the more task you can handle the more confident you become and the eager you are to want to tackle the next task. I'm the type of person that believes if you love something ( and I love my Jeep!)you certainly take the time to learn the INS and outs of it. Plus I think that the Jerp is a big toy puzzle. From what Ive read some of them coMe with headaches but the owners wouldn't change them for anything in the world. And I also notice that once you own a Jeep it's like they join a secret Club. It was the same feeling I got when I learned to cut hair on my own and learnt how to play the guitar, with a watchful eye and guidance of course.

Re: What should I do?? What should I do???

Yeah, I think I need to do something quick. When I drove it out the Dealership it was a smooth ride. Three weeks in I feel the steering wheel kinda stiff, so I checked the Power steering fluid, it was low so I added some STp Joint I bought at a gas station, for Power Steering( Till I Getz paid cause Im broke at the moment) But Um yeah The Jeep still feels stiff and Im trying to get it back into that smooth operator that she was.

I wouldn't bother with the flush. I would, however, recommend changing the tranny filter.

Re: What should I do?? What should I do???

Most people are against having it flushed by the dealer, cause these machines tend to see the worst of the worst, so having it done my machine is something I personally wouldn't do. Plus there's no requirement for that to be done as far as any scheduled work is concerened.

Also the satisfaction that you know no one is cheating you since you're doing it yourself.
