When to use Tow/Haul

I recently purchased a pop-up camper that weighs about 1300 lbs. I've read through the owner's manual but am still unclear about using the tow/haul button. i'm going to be towing the camper about 50 miles on fairly flat roads. Speed limit is 55 mph most of the way. i have the 5.7L Hemi. Do I need to use the tow/haul button.

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

Not for 1300 lbs.. on flat roads.

Long inclines.. passing.. drag racing.. speeds under 60mph b/c tow/haul predominately holds 4th gear and all it will do is rev the engine too high. It also holds gears for longer periods so it avoids constant shifting of the transmission, keeps it cooler

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

I don't think you would need to use the tow/haul with that light of load, especially with a hemi.If you tow a 2500 Pound+trailer then you might want to use it.

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

Pretty simple really. If your tranny is constantly shifting up and down and can't seem to settle in on a gear as you cruise along, you probably should push the tow/haul botton to keep it out of overdrive. If not, then just leave it alone. Trust me, you will know if/when you need to use it.

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

I wouldn't for that light load.

I only use mine when towing 3000lbs plus and in hilly terrain.

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

Or you can get a DashHawk and set it to monitor your tanny fluid temp as I will be doing Wens as I tow my boat south for 5 days of smallie fishing.

Another approach is to use "5" instead of "OD" setting on shifter. If it constantly downshifts, then use Tow/Haul button.

When I pulled a 16 ft covered trailer, packed to the gills with HHG for my daughter, I only had to drop to 5 once. Used Tow/Haul feature at first, because it was a new toy. Didn't need it, so I set xmission to "5" with no adverse effects.
Coming back empty, the HEMI didn't even know there was a trailer behind us!

Re: When to use Tow/Haul

Here's a shot of my 07' pulling a 16' mod-v through the hills of southwest VA. Never once touched the tow/haul button and managed to get 16 mpg for the trip. The ATF stayed below 185 deg the entire time.

Hemi WK is just really nice
Re: When to use Tow/Haul

My boat/trailer combo weighs a little over 3000Lbs and around here with the flat roads I don't use the tow/haul button very often. Only time I really use it is up north where there are more hills.

That's sick.. my boat has a leaky fuel pump and stretched throttle cable.. time to get some work done to her before she takes her summer dip in the lake.
