Cool Where to Start...

Ok, as with anything when first starting out learning something you are destined to suffer from NEWBIE INDECISION .. so here we go.. 5 days ago I purchased this from a dealer "2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 V-6 w/ 82,000 miles" now.. before I hear the "YOU SHOULDA GOT THE HEMI" I have to point out that I need something with a little bit better gas mileage (traded in a '05 Esky 6.0 V-8 AWD) .. so long story short.. sure I am kicking myself in the rear for not just dealing with it and getting the 5.7 but with the papers signed and ownership now belonging to me.. I own it.. so now.. time to make it decent for the next two years until I get my 5.7 .. ok.. I know I can start literally anywhere.. I am dealing with a stock vehicle here.

But, Should I focus the primary emphasis on suspension/tires first or more towards the lil extra power I can squeeze out of her.. oh I guess I should let ya'll know what the ultimate goal is.. To have a Decent BUG OUT vehicle if the situation were to arise.. and also a fun daily driver... so I have NO CLUE what I am doing. This is a New adventure. I am hoping to learn a bunch of pointers and areas in which to attack first..

Have any of you by chance ever heard of or seen or maybe even own one yourself.. but sort of a "BAJA" conversion??

Thanks for the time with dealing with a Newb. I catch on relatively quickly but I will try and use the SEARCH function as much as possible and direct questions when I have them to you guys if ya don't mind helping out.

Better hope we don't get hit with an EMP or so much for BOV.

IMO the first thing you should do is buy a tuner. I think Hypertech is the only one available for the 3.7 but I could be wrong. That will give your 3.7 a little more power, especially if you decided to toss on some bigger rubber down the road. Then I would concentrate on anything that might increase performance, CAI exhaust, TB etc...

Then I would move to suspension and tires.

Just my 2 cents. Hopefully a couple of the guys running the 3.7 will chime in and tell you their experiences.

Ok fair enough I've been doing some reading on this obviously and Hypertech is so far the only one I found but then after doing more reading there was mention of something to do with "SCT" or "PGM" I think was the other one but that's just Greek to me I have no clue about,that stuff so starting out I believe it to be easiest to stick with something of the Hypertech product ... I'm guessing I should go with the one "MAX ENERGY " ...

The intake seemed to be straight forward .. Just a K&N intake (black not the "chrome"..

And I believe Maganaflow makes a decent enough Cat Back System ..


And Yah I best hope we don't have an EMP situation ... That will just not be a good situation all around ..

Wlecome aboard check out this link some of us guys with 3.7's have put together some possible mods for them. I believe Ryan may be able to tune your year better than the hypertech.

You got the little engine that might to gain fuel economy and now you are going to raise it,put bigger tires,performance mod the engine and add a ton of weight...good plan.Shoulda got the hemi.

@ Hacksaw --- ehhh i didn't so much get it for the economy.. long story short.. Got a divorce.. she ruined the HELL out of my credit.. I wanted a new vehicle.. they gave me 8000 for a beat up Caddy Esky with 130k miles on it ... I jumped at the first Grand Cherokee I saw *which was this one* I thought.. ehh 3.7 V-6 should get better gas mileage.. and if I mod it a little bit I should be happy enough with the Power output I get. The Goal wasn't pure fuel economy moreso than to Get rid of the final thing I had purchased in my failed marriage and also to improve my destroyed credit .. so I financed 3500 over 3 yrs at 127 bucks a month (1,200 of this loan is the yr literal bumper to bumper warranty) so I got this what the called "2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rocky Mountain Edition" with 82,000 miles, 1 female owner (55yrs old) -- so i know it was beat !! , 0 accidents all for the quaint price of 10,295 including tax/title/doc ... knowing what I know now yes I probably should have been more selective in my process.. but from what I saw right out the gate I was impressed.. the bank said OK !! we will take a chance on you sir, and the fact I have NOTHING tying me to my EX-WIFE. Well I am very happy in my decision in that.

Sure I could just leave it as is. But it's mine for at least 3 yrs (sure I could pay the loan off in 6 months if I wanted to but that beats the purpose of improving my credit so as I can you know... MOVE ON in life.. being only 31yrs old I have a lot of catching back up to do. So for the next 3 yrs as I fix things I want to at least have a vehicle that I am impressed with, and one that I can tinker with and learn the basics of mechanics and how to appropriately work on a vehicle.. the nuts and bolts of it you know what I mean?? .. and not spend tons and tons of money on it. Where I may decide to keep it and use it as a Back Up vehicle-- BUG OUT-- or just as a Equity Down Payment in 3yrs on something like an 2010 5.7 Hemi .. who knows..

Now, Bigger tires aren't a necessity I suppose.. the purpose of why I stated that was in case of a situation where I did need to Bug Out I wanted to cover all my grounds for a JUST IN CASE scenario.

Power, and possible maybe better fuel consumption.. I dunno.. from what I have read minor adjustments like breathing and expelling (intake - exhaust) .. tend to give 2-3 more miles to the gallon of gas.

That being said, right now I am getting approximately 12.8mpg-13.0mpg according to what the feature says.. (mostly city-ish driving) so I mean.. it's a lot less than what I thought I would be. Maybe there is something that is ..?? WRONG? Something causing it to drink more gas than it should be? I use 91octane aka SUPER in all my vehicles.. I don't see the need to save a quarter per gallon of gas for lower quality.

I knew I was going to receive the reply to this of telling me I should have gone V-8 hahaha.. but I figured there has to be some people out there who purchased the 3.7 and are squeezing whatever they can out of it.. obviously within reason..

From the bottom up, lower octane is not lower quality. Using higher octane than called for won't hurt, but it only helps you emotionally because you think you're buying something better. It is not doing anything for the engine.

Buying what you bought with the small loan was very smart. The mileage your getting seems low, so maybe the first thing to do is find out why. After that's resolved, do what ever mods make it 'yours'. Don't go crazy, 'cause in three years when the loan is paid you'll be looking for a newer one that you take your time picking out. Then, mod the hell out of it if you want.

That's cool...I just read your original post saying you wanted the fuel economy...that being said 12-13 mpg according to the evic is crap! I've got a thirsty 4.7 and average 16. Does it rev at all ? Say you're on the highway with cruise set do the rpms jump around on flat ground ? If it does replace the throttle position sensor (tps). Not sure if the 3.7 is a "fuel filter change not required" vehicle but I would definitely change that. Does it shift ok ?
