Which Oil?

I have a 2005 4.7L V8 Wk. I just purchased it and am enjoying the information I am receiving from this forum. Today we replaced the sparkplugs, air filter, and pcv valve. We were about to do the oil as well however I am finding mixed information about which oil to use.

Using this link, which I find to be "bible" like; http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_maintenance.htm#ENGOIL it clearly says to use 5W 20 oil. I have also read from a couple threads to use 5W 20 also.

However a couple of threads say to use 5W 30, as well as my oil cap says 5W 30.

I am confused, have no way of knowing what oil has been run in it previously, and need advice.

Thank you.

Re: Which Oil?

I do not know what the 4.7 specifies, but it is important to use whatever oil weight the owners manual says to use for the vehicle. It says 5-30 on the oil cap, but I would verify in the manual just in case that is not the original cap.

Thumbs up Re: Which Oil?

Thanks guys. There are just so many threads on here regarding this, and it seems everyone has a different opinion. If the 20 vs 30 is merely a MPG difference and won't do any harm...I would choose to save gas since I am not ready to take it off road yet..Got a few more things to do. I did of course buy Mobil 1 5W20 after reading the WK Jeeps page, but I do have Castrol High Mileage 5W30 as well. Maybe I should mix them? Lol!

Good idea about it being a different gas cap.

Re: Which Oil?

on the 4.7 in 2007 to help with gas mileage they changed the requirement to 5-20 FROM 5-30.

on the hemi, sometime in 05/06 they changed it to 5/20 for the MDS/
