Worn out key...................?

l have a 2005 Jeep GC 5.7 Hemi with 105k miles on the clock that i brought used 4 months or so ago ( i love it). l have 2 keys that came with the Jeep, one key has the key ring tab broken off and has hardly been used , the other key shows quite alot of ware on the metal (finish worn of you can see the brass ). lve been using the worn key as the ring tag is there and i have other keys. When the weather turned winter out the worn key would crank the jeep the engine would catch rpm rise abit as usual but instead of it settling at 800rpm (ish) when cold, or 620rpm (ish)when warm the revs would just fall and the motor die an l would a 0513 error code. However with the newer key it starts up fine and after an hours drive no error codes. lve done this twice same deal, the warn key will start the truck and it will die, 0513 error code. Change keys and it starts fine and the code goes away.

So anyone else had this? lm pretty sure the worn key is the culprit, the question is should i get a new key or get 2 new keys and a new cylinder? l dont want to wait until the ''spare'' wares out. lm not the richest guy around so if i can get away with one key that would be a result.

Thanks

Re: Worn out key...................?

Thanks for your answer kenzzs

l got the key with all the buttons , so its $60 to my door which is fine, i will get 2.

What should i expect the dealer to hit me up for $ wise for the programming?

lf i got 2 x new keys could i still keep/use the working one i have as a spare spare?

Re: Worn out key...................?

not sure on the cost i would expect 1/2 hour of the labor charge probably in the 50 dollar range yes the old key should still work, i would try calling several locksmiths too perhaps they are cheaper
look around for those keys maybe try amazon too perhaps u can get them cheaper

Re: Worn out key...................?

some of those keys are just empty shells you put youre old pushbutton "guts" into so be careful what you buy

OH AND QUIT USING THAT OLD KEY I THINK IF YOU DO IT 3 TIMES IN A ROW IT WILL LOCK YOU OUT(WONT START ANYMORE) AND U WILL HAVE TO GET TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR AN UNLOCK

It is also possible that your local Ace hardware or Walmart may be able to not only cut but program your keys. Worth checking as some dealers charge $100 a key and I have seen a Walmart (In Virginia) that sold them for $29.99 programmed

Re: Worn out key...................?

Definitely shop around to see if you can get a deal on the programming. I've been charged as much as $140 for the cut and program, and as little as $30 depending on the dealership.

The suggestion of trying locksmiths is another great idea.

If you want to do it for the lowest cost: You may be able to buy a key without the FOB and have that programmed as your spare, then take the internals out of the key with the broken key ring and put them into the shell of the key with the intact keyring.

The major cost here is likely to be the programming either way.

Order 2 keys online for $15 each have the hardware store cut them for $2 and get 1 programmed at the cheapest place then program your other one yourself. Store one of them in a safe place and never have that issue again.

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Ya l hear you, i asked about that. Problem is i live 110 miles from town in the mountains. they will not warranty 3rd party keys, in this case i would rather pay a bit more for the peace of mind, and not have to foot a tow bill.

Thanks for the thought!
