6.5" upgrade to 8.4" uconnect 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland

I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland built in October 2010.
It has the 6.5" deck. Is it possible to upgrade to the 8.4" uconnect found in the 2014 and newer models?

If not, why?

Sorry if this is elsewhere on the forums. But I searched and searched and couldn't find anyone asking.

Greetings and welcome,

Unfortunately you can not upgrade from the 6.5 to 8.4 uConnect. The 8.4 is for the model year 2014+ due to the reconfiguration of the electrical system.

You are better off investing in aftermarket headunit, in addition you will save a huge amount of money. The three (3) preferred bands to look at are Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood.

Best for now.

Thanks for the response. Did Chrylser disclose why they changed the system? Or atleast the harness configuration? I was just hoping theyd have an adapter for the plugs as a quick fix.

Ive done plenty of aftermarket my entire life. But was hoping to keep it "factory" even if not original.

Greetings,

You have the HVAC controls going thru the 8.4 and some other data running thru the CAM bus.

If you could still find a Rosen 6.5 headunit for Chrysler uConnect, it is extremely close to factory and it is far better than what you have.

Best for now.

May be somebody else in the forum has heard of this company.

Im completely indifferent to the hvac controls... seems pointless to have knob controls and touch screen controls inches apart.

The unit is described as an RB5 which is an actual Chrysler unit found in many vehicles.
Im just not sure if the listing is accurate to being able to be used in a 2011-2013 GC.

Honestly I just want all the features of the 830n RHR but in an 8.4" screen.

Im not sure of the mounting, but the 8.4 decks will fit in 2011-2013 as far as physical room.

Re: 6.5" upgrade to 8.4" uconnect 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland

Greetings,

I would give them a call to verify if it works for 2011-2013. There are many threads on the main WK2 Audio forum that talks about how the conversion is a problem and the electrical systems are completely different. More specific, the computer codes in the HI Speed CAM Bus are different in the model years.

Best for now.

6.5" upgrade to 8.4" uconnect 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland

I had an 06 Charger and swapped in a mygig back in 09. A lot of reverse engineering was done to enable all the features by lots of people around the world.

As far as the 8.4 unit goes though I think it would be next to impossible unless you got some assistance from the OEM (which we did for the mygig swap).

Re: 6.5" upgrade to 8.4" uconnect 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland

Greetings,

For years, Chrysler was one of the easiest cars to upgrade the audio system. It seams in the last 5 to 7 years, it has been more complicated as the years go on. This current generation of the uConnect is a pain. Many 3rd party harness manufactures are still debating on how to handle this situation, especially the 8.4. That is why you see the aftermarket world developing new DSP's and amps to work with and cleanup the signals coming out of OE factory headunit. Pioneer is now devoting themselves as an OE as is Alpine. Audison with new Prima line joined in as well.

I strongly doubt that Chrysler who is strongly protecting uConnect will be of any assistance this days.

That is why for the WK2 years of 2011-2013, I always recommend to change headunit since it is doable and get technology that is far superior to the MyGiG of that time.

Just my 2 cents.

Best for now.
