I am getting readying to put some subs in the trunk of my 09 wk with the boston system. i will probably upgrade the whole system eventually but this is first.
I want to put two 12s or two 10s in the trunk, I like alpine type R and kicker comp VR, and maybe even two 12 alpine type x. but I am new to subs so ill take any advice. I want to know how much power (watts) I will need to get two 12s to their potential.
2 type R 10 inch - watts?
2 type R 12 inch - watts?
2 kicker Comp VR 10s - watts?
2 kicker Comp VR 12s - watts?
2 type x 12 inch- watts?

What amp would you recommend? How about this?

First, welcome to the forum!

I challenge you to explore the idea of using a sub woofer that cannot be bought at big box stores. You will certainly get a higher quality driver for a usually better price. Just something to think about.

What are your goals? Loud (SPL), loud, but sound good (SQL), not necessarily deafning, and sound good (SQ). I hate using these terms/classifications, but it seems like the best way to determine in this case.

Amplifier selection will soley depend on the voice coil configuration of your sub woofer(s). Sub woofer selection must come before amplifier selection.

I know it can be hard, but try not to get all caught up on wattage. To think there is a considerable audible difference between 600 watts and 1,000 watts is foolish. Everytime you double your power, you only increase by 3 decibels. Picking an efficient driver (or maximizing cone area) and utilizing an efficient enclosure will greatly reduce the amount of power you will need.

Matt you rock. How much do you want to spend? I am really happy with the recommendation Matt gave me: 10" SSA Icon sub and Sundown 1000 amp. I wanted the ability to bump with superior sound quality ALL with taking up the least amount of space...I got a 1.0 cu^ft 10" box and it is PERFECT! Give Matt the info he needs and he will give you a great recommendation! Good luck

Brad I may follow you. You seem very happy with the results. Give me your shopping list... LOL

Im willing to spend a decent amount of money because I want it loud and hitting hard. quality is important but Id rather have it hitting hard. My friend is running type x and I think hes got an alpine PDX 1.600. I would like something hitting harder then that

I spent $800 total on my setup. here is my build log and parts...

http://www.jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=2075

I wanted a space-saving set-up that would not totally break the bank but I did not want to skimp either. I used to have a 15" audiobahn in my Dakota and while that def pounded my chest more, my SSA Icon gives 10X more quality bass and is 80-90% of the "bumpage" (word I made up)...and another thing about my set-up: I can turn the gain all the way up and the sub does not distort, and with the gain all the way it is damn clsoe to how hard my 15" hit!!! BUT I listen to Matt and right now the gain is a little less than half-way!!!

OH MAN!! I can't even imagine how sweet that set-up would be! So do you have a pic Matt of an enclosure in an SUV that is what this bad boy requires? 3.0 cu ft?

Enclosure Recommendations:

Sealed: 2.0 - 2.25 cu.ft.
Sealed: 2.75 - 3.0 cu.ft. optimal
Ported: 3.0 - 3.25 cu.ft. @ 26-33 hz
Ported: 4.0 cu.ft. @ 26-33hz opt.
Sub Outside Dia.: 15.625”
Cut Inside Dia.: 14.125”
Displacement: 0.20 cu.ft.

I havne't modeled the t/s parameters, but I'm guessing that 4 cube enclosure is a flatter/better response. 4 cubes + port and driver displacement + wood displacement = the entire rear cargo area. That's something you have in your car for a year and then decide that having an SUV without any cargo space is worthless and that having a LOUD sub woofer system is really not all that it's cracked up to be. You get sick of it real fast and discover that you are usually listening to it at "normal" volumes so you can hear vocals and whatnot. It's one of those impulse buys you regret down the road.

So by getting a 15" sub with that amount of power/handling capabilities, do you pretty much need to get the optimal 4.0 cu ft ported? With a 2.0 cu ft sealed are you kinda wasting the sub/amp combo you bought? Just talking out loud...mainly b/c I have a 15" sub I am thinking about building/getting a box for and be able to just switch it in and out for $hits and giggles.

Well, it really depends on what you're looking to get out of the sub woofer system. You could build a "fart" box that basically has a very high peak at a specific frequency - this is what those who compete in SPL competitions use (burping). They sound like absolute shit on music.

But I'm willing to bet that the larger (and low-tuned) the enclosure the flatter the response, which = the better it will sound.

If you want to build an enclosure for that 15" that will get loud as hell on one note, then shoot me the t/s parameters and I'll model it up and tell you what to build.
